Now that summer has officially arrived (I say that sitting in my 90+ degree weather I’m entertaining right now), spring decided to take a pass on us this year. So yes, its another look at what goes onto your skin… I’m sure we can all agree sun safety is important – no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. If you’re like me, you’re lathering up your child every minute you get… add that up, that’s a LOT of sunscreen your child’s skin is drinking in. Have you bothered to give your bottle a once over?According to the Environmental Working Group, in an investigation of nearly 1,000 brand-name sunscreen products
, they found that 4 out of 5 contain chemicals that may pose health hazards or don’t adequately protect skin from the sun’s damaging rays – excuse me!?! Some of the worst offenders you’d be shocked to find out are probably the ones you’ve come to rely on the most such as Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena.
Even more shocking, despite more than a million cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year in the US, the FDA still HAS YET to finalized sunscreen standards. Meanwhile, companies are free to claim but not provide broad spectrum protection – shocking huh?!
Take a minute or two to check out your sunscreen’s rating at cosmeticsdatabase.com. I was once again happy to see California Baby’s SPF30+ Sunscreen Stick with a beautiful ranking of “0” while still being water resistant and completely fragrance free, as well as Trukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum, SPF 30+, both their lotion formulations have a still wonderful rating of “1”.
So the lesson people – give everything that goes on your skin and your baby’s skin a once over… and what’s good for baby is also good for mommy too… as far as sunscreen goes.
