How to find the Perfect New Addition to your Family

It’s rare that one can say they get to choose who is family or not unless you’re choosing your family pet. Both my husband and I have had beloved dogs in our lives. I will be the first to admit I probably wasn’t the best pet owner back then as the responsibilities to me seemed overwhelming but at least I realized that. For my husband, when his companion passed, he was completely heartbroken (he went off the grid to mourn him) and swore he would never be able to own another dog again.

But here we are, 3 children later, who are begging, BEGGING for a dog… we’re talking PowerPoint presentation and all (see above and below). Promises upon promises and of course their sad puppy eyes. All which now has me unable to shake this feeling that our family is not yet complete without a family dog.

Still in our preliminary search, but was so thrilled to come across Get Your Pet, an online community that helps connect people who aren’t able to keep their pets directly to people who want to adopt them. It’s a WIN/WIN situation that relieves the heavy burden on shelters and saving animals’ lives all at the same time.

It’s hard to imagine, but 7.5 million animals are put in shelters every year, 2.5 of those are from people that had to give up their pet for one reason or another (no judgement here!). Of the 7.5 million animals put in shelters, it’s completely heartbreaking to learn that 2.6 million of the animals are euthanized. By helping keep pets needing a new home out of shelters, we can potentially save 2.5 million pets a year!

Knowing these numbers made it clear to me that if we were to introduce a new member into our family, it HAD to be through adoption. I know our search was going to be a lengthy one due to our parameters of a young and hypoallergenic dog that could grow with the kids, but it would be so worth it to find our perfect match.

Get Your Pet is an awesome and super easy to use site. It’s constantly being updated with new pets daily and the $99 fee is so minimal (shelters and rescues charge almost double sometimes). It covers administrative costs making it a legally documented adoption but also includes:

  • A voucher for a pet exam by a participating Get Your Pet Vet.
  • A certificate for 30 days’ pet insurance from Trupanion (offer varies in California).
  • Money-saving in-store coupons valuable for those who live near Pet Valu stores.
  • $40 off pet care services with Rover, the nation’s largest network of 5-star pet sitters and dog walkers (new Rover customers only).
  • Right to re-list the pet on Get Your Pet, if the adoption doesn’t work out.

It’s so simple to browse through the pets, message potential matches and even propose meet ups. It was equally wonderful and sad to see how many inquiries were being made to each current guardian – wonderful to see how many people were considering adoption over breeders but sad to have to compete and make your family stand out among all those who are interested in the same pet you are interested in. I’ve had to tell my kids many times that a perfect match is out there, our new family member is out there, waiting for us. Until then, we are checking in often! Tell me how your found your family dog.
