As a healthcare provider, the possibilities of this FREE Amwell app are amazing. I couldn’t wait to try out this Amwell app but with my one visit, I wasn’t sure what service I wanted to utilize. With options to remotely speak to primary care, diet and nutrition as well as psychology or doctors locally specializing in primary care, therapy, dermatology, or pediatrics with open office hours, there was so many choices. Until I had no choice. Now I am completely obsessed with this app and can’t stop telling everyone about my experience.
Yesterday, I was in meetings all day long. A little after noon, I started to have fragmented vision. Not an aura, but looking directly at someone, they looked fragmented. I was a little worried. I kept blinking my eyes, tried to rest them for a few minutes, but it wouldn’t go away. Then I started to feel nauseated. I wondered if the pizza I had for lunch was bad. Or was the virus being passed around my children finally hitting me? When it was time for me to leave for school, I got into the car, not feeling well at all and drove. I had to talk myself through the entire drive, willing myself to focus driving and get safely to my destination. I felt terrified something was seriously wrong but there was no where to pull over by that time, plus I had no time to be sick! So I kept driving and finally got myself right over the bridge and to my school with an hour to spare before class. I found parking right away and I tried to close my eyes but I didn’t feel any better, in fact I started to feel even worse. I started to seriously contemplate if I should walk across the street to the hospital and go to the ER. That’s how awful I felt. I wasn’t quite sure I should go to class even though I really couldn’t afford to miss class and yet I wasn’t quite sure I could make the drive home either. Then I decided to put the Amwell app to my review. Real life, real emergency.
Despite a faint wifi connection to my school’s WiFi, I turned off wireless and relied on my 4G LTE to make my virtual visit. I hadn’t gone through the complete set up yet but within a couple minutes I was all set-up. I clicked through Amwell Medical, scrolled through the list of available doctors, skimmed a few profiles before making my selection, Dr. Lisa Thompson, a primary care physician that had 20 years of emergency medicine experience.
Within a couple of minutes I was video chatting with Dr. Thompson, still sitting in my car. She was extremely polite and listened carefully to my problem. From a health care provider’s perspective, she asked all the right questions, was very patient and thorough in her assessment. She determined that I was having a migraine which I was already treating with Motrin and wanted to address the nausea issue. She prescribed zofran, alternating between Motrin and Tylenol for any headache pain, advised against driving home and aided me in finding the nearest pharmacy to my current location at school to fill my prescription right away.
In just only 30 minutes, I had visited with my doctor, filled a prescription and was on my way to feeling well enough to go to class. It was exactly the efficiency and recovery that this busy mom and student needed and wanted. By the time class was over, all my symptoms were gone and I was able to drive home safely.
Immediately following my video appointment I received a full summary of my visit for my record and I was able to review it and any details that I might have forgotten in my distress. I was so completely impressed with the entire experience. It was a way better and more efficient visit than I would have had in an emergency room. I also realized that I didn’t have the luxury of reading a profile and choosing my doctor in the ER, but was able to in the Amwell app.
