Sports, the Ultimate Classroom

Guest Writer and Momma-to-be, Latasha Pamphile got to attend a fabulous Mom’s Football Clinic at the NY Giants Quest Diagnostics Training Center at MetLife Sports Complex.

Check out the baby bump!Sponsored by the NY Giants and Bounty Paper Towels,  thanks to Suzanne Chan, who knew what a DIE-HARD New York Giants fan I am, I got a chance to meet and speak with Stevie Brown, Safety of the NY Giants (!!!!) and his mom, Karla Brown. It was such an amazing experience!  I never thought about it, but sports is the ultimate classroom. It’s so much more than book smarts, but gives kids the tools to use for a lifetime. Kids learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, perseverance, respect for authority and rules, and how to win with class and lose with dignity.  You can’t become a professional football player without knowing that first.  While I don’t know if being a professional football player is in peanut’s future, I know some sort of sports will be.  Stevie and his mom had a lot to share.

IMG_3591We talked about the importance of good nutrition and hydration as key elements for overall safety when playing a contact sport like football.  We talked about how expensive sports equipment can be, but proper fitting helmets and pads prevent many costly and life-threatening injuries, making them a worthwhile investment. As a nurse, I can definitely attest to the importance of that!  Stevie and his friends even took the time to show us proper fitting of helmets and shoulder pads.  I also learned the helmets need to be reconditioned annually, which makes total sense, but who knew!

As both the husband and I are HUGE Giants fans, I got a chance to ask Stevie when he thought it was appropriate for a child to start playing football.  You know there will be football in my kid’s future!  Stevie felt there are many variables to when a child should start to play football.  Most importantly INTEREST, MATURITY and RESPONSIBILITY topped his list as football requires a lot of coordination and attention to detail. I will definitely be passing on these words of wisdom to our little peanut, who will definitely be a NY GIANTS fan!

IMG_3599Until then, we have many football homegating and tailgating parties in between. Even I know that child obesity has become a problem. With Bounty NFL Prints in hand (I mean, seriously, how cute are these?!), New York Giants Executive Chef Angelo Basilone taught us how to whip up quick and delicious, healthy recipes such as Turkey Chili and 3 Bean Chili to keep children energized when homegating and tailgating. Download these fabulous recipes HERE. Karla Brown talked about how important choosing the right food and snack choices can help kids be better athletes like her son.  Those cute Bounty NFL prints will help and encourage kids to help clean up after too!

The annual Mom’s Clinic invited local moms with young athletes to the team’s training facility in East Rutherford, NJ. Moms participated in an interactive cooking demo with healthy homegating and tailgating recipes and learned football fundamentals through drills and educational sessions.

Available at Walmart, customized Bounty NFL Prints are 2X more absorbent,so the roll lasts longer to tackle your big game day spills. I’m stocking up, are you?!

{ disclosure:  I attended the Annual Mom’s Clinic as a guest of Bounty.  As always, all opinions expressed here are my very own! }
