Bringing in the Holiday Spirit with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular

radiocityChristmas in New York City is something everyone should experience once in their life.  From ice skating at Central Park,  Rockefeller Center or Bryant Park to the gorgeous Holiday windows and tree-lighting at Rockefeller Center to Santa at Macy’s Herald Square and even Salvation Army Santas on every corner or chestnuts roasting on street carts, it is a beauty to behold.  The city, if even possible, becomes even more energetic.  The holiday spirit is palpable.

rccA Christmas holiday tradition for many, and one not to be missed, is the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  Would you believe that I have never gone?!  Yes, this native New Yorker has NEVER EVER been to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular!  As a child, my parents couldn’t afford luxuries like dining out or going to a movie, let alone seeing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  But you could never miss the signage and the Rockettes who became synonymous with the start of the holiday season in New York. As much as I wanted to see this much talked about show, I never dare asked for such a gift from my parents but added it to the bucket list of things to do with my own children, highlighting one of many true New York City experiences. I was beyond thrilled to check this off our list recently and you would be hard-pressed to tell who was more excited, me or the children!

rccs_sceneWhile there are Radio City Christmas Spectacular shows all across the country, there is something special about seeing it in New York City and the famed and iconic Radio City Music Hall. What an amazing show with the largest flying indoor LED screen, and what my son said was “SO COOL” – the 3D realistic aerial flight from the North Pole to New York City.  The show was a visual stunner.  Both my kids were sitting on the edge of their seats.  At times, my 4-year old stuck his head in between the row in front of us to get a better view.  I was grateful for the family’s graciousness as he kept doing this throughout the show.   My kids loved the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers!   My absolute favorite scene was the Living Nativity.  The colors and emotion was so overwhelmingly gorgeous and the live camels!!!!! – BLOWN AWAY!  I love that my children and I, while every scene was amazing, our favorites were two original classics.

FUN FACTS:
  • more than 1 million pairs of 3D glasses will be distributed this year!
  • There are over 1,100 costumes used in this 90 minute production
  • The tap shoes worn by the Rockettes have microphones!!!
  • Two of the most cherished scenes in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular are the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and the “Living Nativity”, both of which have been a part of the show since 1933!
