Disneyland Eats

mickeyWhile it’s all about the rides and attractions for the kids, it’s all about the food for me.  Unlike any other theme park, Disney does much more than the average pizza and hot dog meal.  Some of the top rated meals can be had at Disneyland.

Let’s start with the iconic Disney basics.
Courtesy of Jasmine Forte of http://www.soyouthinkyoucanmom.com/DOLE WHIP.  It’s what dreams are made of.  One of the most talked about treats at Disney (land and World) is the Dole Whip.  There’s a cult following.  Just a glance at the lines, you know you’ve hit the jackpot.  They even have an app to tell how long one can expect to wait to get their hands on this refreshing treat!  Let them know if it’s your FIRST Dole Whip, you may get a pin commemorating this momentous occasion!  It’s been said to go way in advance of a show at the Enchanted Tiki Room, the line inside the waiting area is shorter than on the Adventureland side.  Did I mention you can take it into the show too?  Want a little taste of Disney beforehand?  I found a great recipe by ChocolateCoveredKatie.com! [NOTE:  There is a rumor the Tiki Juice Bar is closed for renovations, please say it ain’t so!]  ALLERGY:  If you’ve got a child with a dairy allergy like mine, Dole Whip is rumored to be dairy free.  I will be researching that for sure!  Stay TUNED! }

Ridiculous!  Let me tell you, they are pretty awesome, especially if you have a long wait on line.  It’s saved this family several times and I’m not beyond sending the husband off for a hunt when waiting (Child Swap?)

pretzelCREAM CHEESE PRETZELS.  OMG, filled with a sweet cream cheese… the perfect combination of sweet and salty!  The fact that it’s Mickey shaped is just a bonus!

Moving onto some Disneyland exclusives…
BEIGNETS.  Where can you find these delights? In a little restaurant by New Orleans Square and the railroad station of course!  It is also rumored to be a place somewhere in Downtown Disney too.  Live a little like Tiana from the Priness and the Frog!  Check the diet at the gate.

MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH.  It’s been called world famous and with the price tag to go with it.  What is it?  It’s definitely not for the faint of heart — a DEEP FRIED ham sandwich.  Yep!  Rumor has it that it’s cheaper at Cafe Orleans, but get it at Blue Bayou and the trade-off is you get a gorgeous view of Pirates of the Carribean.  Oh if you’re wanting a little less meat in your diet, try the three-cheese monte cristo, its got double creme brie… OMG!

CORN DOGS.  The Corn Dogs found at Disneyland are better than any fairground.  The two best spots to find the best and largest Corn Dogs are Little Red Wagon on Main Street and Corn Dog Castle at California Adventure.

BIG THUNDER RANCH BBQ.  I can guarantee we will be making a stop here.  My husband loves his BBQ and he knows Disney does it right.  While at the Animal Kingdom, we HAD to stop at Flame Tree BBQ.  Just say all-you-can eat BBQ and you just made a best friend.  You’ll get a little of everything, but don’t be shy and ask for your favorites to keep on coming.  Alongside some great entertainment at Frontierland, it’s a great way to end your day.

LOBSTER NACHOS (at Cove Bar).  Lobster.  Enough said.

MATTERHORN MACAROON.  Baked fresh each morning at the Jolly Holiday Bakery. Just YUM!

Dining Disney Style.
Time is precious when you’re trying to make the most of your trip to Disneyland.  Spending half the time waiting in super long lines to meet your children’s favorite Disney Characters is neither yours or your children’s favorite way to spend time.   I’m a huge fan of Character Dining.  The Disneyland Resort offers five Disney Character Dining experiences where Disney Characters mix and mingle with your family during your dining experience. Goofy’s Kitchen which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, came highly recommended.  I am a fan of doing the breakfast.  Not only do you get the iconic Mickey waffles, it’s also a lot cheaper and less crowded.  I am always a fan of filling up before a big day at the park, after all breakfast is the MOST IMPORTANT meal of the day!   I have to say Surf’s Up! With Mickey and Friends at PCH Grill sounds totally AWESOME DUDE!  DEAL: Discounted Disney Character Dining tickets can be purchased in advance through Get Away Today with tax and tip included!

Cannot forget Disney California Adventures.
carsReady for the best seat in the house?  Flo’s V8 Cafe has some beautifully themed dining rooms, but on a beautiful day, the best spot to enjoy your meal is right behind the restaurant in the  open-air seating overlooking the Radiator Springs Racers. Zoom Zoom Zoom!

There is always tons of talk about finding the best spot to view the award-winning World of Color nighttime spectacular which takes place nightly in Disney’s California Adventure Park.  This show is different from any other show in the fact that you will NEED a FASTPASS ticket to get access to the World of Color viewing areas.  There are 3 ways to get a FASTPASS ticket.  (1) at the FASTPASS ticket distribution machine outside of Grizzly River Run.  (Staying at one of 3 Disneyland Resorts?  You can access this machine 30 minutes before Disney California Adventure Park opens!  (2)  A reservation at Ariel’s Grotto or Wine and Country Trattoria will grant you premium viewing tickets for that day’s show.  (3) or my favorite, purchasing a World of Color Picnic at Sonoma Terrace.  There are (4) cold Adult meal options and (2) children’s meal options.  You can purchase meals online for pick up anytime.  Always get to the viewing area early, as the best spots go FAST!

Will you be making a list and checking it off?  What other Disneyland treats are must-tries?!

If you have a child with allergies, read my post here on Disney and Allergies.
