SPOTTED: iPad… LeapPad!

The brilliant people at LeapFrog are saving iPads everywhere! They just unveiled their newest toy, the LeapPad. It is a personalized learning tablet designed for kids 4 and up, combining the latest technology, enhanced educational curriculum, and most entertaining characters to fuel a child’s learning.

Designed for little hands and big imaginations, LeapPad will launch with LeapFrog’s largest library ever and offers more than 100 learning game cartridges, books, apps and videos, by year end. Even more exciting for the penny pinching mom, it is completely backwards compatible with the entire library of Leapster Explorer game cartridges and apps!

We love that they are a part of the LeapFrog Learning Path where games auto-adjust so kids can learn at just the right pace – and each LeapPad book app is actually three books in one – offering each story at three different levels. LeapPad even remembers a child’s progress from game to game and book to book to keep the content challenging and engaging. Kids can build a strong learning foundation with phonics skills, mathematics and spelling, and then take learning beyond the basics to geography, world languages, music, creativity, science and life skills such as brushing their teeth. As they embark on new learning adventures, kids can also practice their writing skills with step-by-step guidance and a child-sized stylus.

What I love even more is that they don’t even know they’re learning.  We got a chance to preview the LeapPad and Ava was as comfortable with it as any gadget.  She didn’t require any instructions and she figured out how to work the camera, play games and basically walked circles around this mom who usually reads manuals cover to cover.

LeapPad has 2 GB of memory, and a 5” touch screen with 480×272 resolution. It offers kids motion-based play with a sensor and includes a built-in camera, video recorder, microphone and stylus. Available in pink and green, it will retail for $99.99, with down-loadable apps priced at $5.00 and up and game cartridges at $24.99. Available in August you can pre-order now!
