Look What’s Happening at the Bronx Zoo in the Month of June!

IMG_4619The month of June is going to be an exciting one at the Bronx Zoo this year! There are several programs not to be missed and your outdoor adventures await just minutes from your doorstep.
the Bronx Zoo is thrilled to be celebrating the highly anticipated opening of The Children’s Zoo, where kids will be able to get outside and get involved in the nature that surrounds them. Your families will be able to get up close and personal with some of the zoo’s wild animals like the giant anteater or the world’s smallest deer. Don’t forget about the incredible petting zoo, where children can actually reach out and touch some amazing mammals.IMG_4979
There is also a beautiful new exhibit that can be found right by the mouse house called ‘How Do You Make Your Garden Grow’ children’s garden, presented by FarmON! Foundation. This new exhibit will offer tons of kid -friendly events that will take place every weekend. Beginning on June 8 the garden will be open daily and provide a ton of fun activities. On June 6th-7th your family will have the chance to get down and dirty at the ‘Meet Your Farmer: Seed & Soil’ event. Children will learn how to make a garden grow at the Bronx Zoo dig station. Presented by common ground farm, Eat a Rainbow is a hands on discussion about the importance of eating food of various colors.  They will also have samples and examples to try. Have a chance to join a special butter churning demonstration and discuss how dairy milk can be transformed into cheese. You could also join The Green Bronx Machine as they celebrate urban framing and learn about ways to farm while living in the city.

IMG_4978Then, on June 13th-14th, McEnroe Organic Farm will be at the zoo helping families learn the basics of composting at the ‘From Kitchen to Compost; Composting: Food Waste’ event.
Kids will meet the earthworm in a fun and informative activity and enjoy story time with Professor Snail and his friends as they explore a worm composting bin.
Your family will join in on the fun and even learn how to grow your own soil and create a small worm box.

June 20th-21st: Are you still looking for something fun to do for Father’s Day? An exciting event happening at the zoo this Father’s Day weekend is celebrating all-star Dads with healthy food and recipes. Eat Local NY will be presenting a fermentation workshop which will talk about pickling and fermentation. You’ll have the opportunity to join French Culinary Institute chef, Lisa Witkowski as she presents healthy and seasonal recipes from the garden, showing kids how to utilize nutrition-packed ingredients for fun snacks on the go. Dads and children alike can test their skills at the American favorite farmyard competition which will include a beanbag toss and corn hole. Super Sprowtz will also be on site. Meet Roger and Colby Carrot on June 20th at 12 -1PM and again from 2 to 3PM

June 27th-28th. The last weekend in June is equally as exciting. This is when the Bronx Zoo will be Celebrating Pollinators. The zoo will host honey tastings from Eat Local and explain the importance of pollinators. Children will have the chance to play Pollinatorpalooza! where they can find their inner bee, butterfly, or hummingbird and learn the language of their bee to get the job done. Families can learn simple ways to help these creatures in their very own neighborhood and become official pollinator protectors.

Each weekend will also include hands on activities to celebrate the opening of the Bronx Zoo children’s zoo with craft projects at Dancing Crane Pavilion and Re-Usable the Musical which is a one-of-a-kind show that takes you on a musical journey to learn about protecting our animals in the wild with actions that we can begin to take at home. Your children will learn the importance of the five Rs: Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, and let’s not forget to Remember!   This show will run in the Asia theater at 12:30pm, 1:15pm, 2:00pm, 2:45pm and 3:30pm.IMG_4669
