Ending Child Hunger Starts Now, with a code! #ChildHunger
August 21st, 2013
During the school year, 21.5 million children rely on free or reduced-price meals to help them keep from going hungry. When school is out, only 2.3 million children participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This means there are millions of children at an increased risk of hunger during the summer. You can help by purchasing participating ConAgra Foods products and entering those codes to trigger meal donations.
I am so thrilled to be a part of this social media movement where at Blissdom alone, tweeting efforts with the #ChildHunger hashtag, helped us reach a total donation of 186,426 meals. There is a time in my childhood when my parents struggled to put food on the table. My parents were proud people and while I’d like to think no one noticed, we were just the “natually skinny” kids. I distinctly recall several times where caring teachers at school, and ones that watched us playing outside the junior high school we lived right across the street from, approached my sister and I with information and cards to go to our schools for free breakfast and lunch during the school year and summer time. My family has come a long way from that period where rice was our only choice for a meal. I have to say that I had to struggle with sharing this personal glimpse of my childhood, but it’s an important story to tell. Child hunger is not an issue of poverty. With more than 1 in 5 children in this country suffering from food insecurity – that’s nearly 17 million children – we know that hungry kids are in our schools, our neighborhoods and even right next door.
Continue to enter codes from your favorite participating ConAgra foods (look for the red pushpin on specifically marked packages of 19 select ConAgra Foods brands) on the widget to your right or directly at ChildHungerEndsHere.com. For every code entered by 8/31/13, ConAgra Foods will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.
Have a second to spare? You can also enter your zip code to submit your local Feeding America food bank into a competition for an 80,000-meal donation. At the end of the campaign, ten food banks in the zip codes with the most entries will receive the additional donation!
Need to take more physical action?! There are food banks all over that are looking for volunteers all year round. It always warms my heart when my husband volunteers every year to our local food bank. Visit: http://feedingamerica.org/foodbank-results.aspx to find a food bank near you!
