VISITING: Stepping Stone Museum

Childrens museums are one of my favorite kid busy activities. I love that there are more than plenty of activities for my wide-age spanned clan (18 months, 4 & 7 year old) as well as many that they can all happily participate in together.  They are way better than any amusement park in my book.  There is no worry of heat exhaustion or dehydration, plenty of air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter.  I relish in letting them run amok while learning at the same time, even if they won’t acknowledge the learning part.   The best part about childrens museums is what affordable fun they are with a museum membership.  While the childrens museum reciprocal plan has undergone some major changes with some facilities limiting the free access to 2 tickets, they are still worth every penny.

Living in the city, you have great access to so many children’s museums.  Just to name a few:  Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Brooklyn Children’s Museum and the Long Island Children’s Museum.  Included now are some of the science museums including the New York Hall of Science.

Recently we got visit one of our favorite childrens museum’s, Stepping Stone Museum, in Norwalk, Connecticut as guests of Kids Club Thirteen ambassador, Lisa of New York Chica.  Just a little over an hour outside of the city, it’s a well worth it trek.  A beautifully and recently renovated museum, my kids couldn’t get enough.  Most of our morning was spent in the newly expanded Tot Town.  On a fairly quiet weekday, they will allow an older child entry with their younger siblings provided they are behaved.  For this mom, this was important.  My little boy was allowed to climb and explore to his hearts content while his older siblings helped him at every turn.  It was endearing to watch how protective they were of their little brother.  Even so I watched his growing independence as his confidence grew with slide down and back up the tree house path.

One of our favorite stops in the museum was the Energy Lab.   Who doesn’t love water fun?!  Equipped with child sized lab coats, they were experimenting with levels and pulls — splishing and splashing abound.

There’s so much to do at this expansive museum, we had only touched on a few of the amazing activities this place had to offer.  We’ll definitely be back real soon and hope you’ll check it out as well!

P.S.  This is a breastfeeding-friendly facility with a comfy couch inside the Tot Town infant arena!

Sun Day, Sun Screen with Sunbow!

I’m a little crazy about sun protection as everyone should be.  I’m always scouring my family for signs of skin cancer.  No, there is no history in our family but at the same time, they love to be in the sun ALL the time. If they’d only invent a dip that lasts each summer season I would be so happy.  Every year it seems we’re searching for a new sunscreen.  Our first year was our California Baby Sunscreen.  As much as we loved it, it’s thick as can be and applying it can be somewhat of an art form.  It’s still our emergency sunscreen if we run out as it’s often commercially available at some of our favorite box-top stores.

This year I was hoping to find one that wasn’t as pastie and easier to apply, more like a lotion.  We stumbled upon Sunbow Sunscreen.  It is rated on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database with a score of 2.  While it’s not the lowest, it’s not the worst offender either (10 is the highest and worst score).  What I love about Sunbow is that my daughter loves it.  Why?  Because it is covered in her absolute favorite character, Dora the Explorer.  I struggle enough getting that first application of sunscreen on and a repeat is often a fight of will – will she or won’t she.  To prove my point, welcome to my little puerto rican princess.  People often look at her and then look at me and I can see their heads swimming in wonder, where is her mother?  Har Har Har… she tans dark.  Oh I hope for a summer where she colors more closely to mine.  While I intend not to abuse my skin, I plan on slathering her every hour instead of the recommended 2½ hours.  Hey a girl’s gotta try!  Maybe this summer she’ll be a little more Filipino?

Sunbow comes in 3 different application methods – tube, spray and stick.  It’s a winning combination.  While I found the tube as thick as our trusty California Baby, I’ve come to terms that it may be the best coverage yet.  We love the spray!  What I can appreciate is the fun colors that it applies on as, but dries CLEAR.  It lets me know that I haven’t missed a spot and the kids think it’s just magical!  My routine now includes tube first, spray for reapplication and stick for nose, ears and cheeks  – swipe, swipe and swipe!  Sometimes you have to embrace those characters, they can be your friends!  They will be a staple on our end of summer trip!

SPOTTED: K’Nex Mario Kart Wii Building Sets

I can’t believe something I use to love as a kid is still around and kicking… there was no hiatus for those two busy plumbers, Mario and Luigi!  The family and I were on hand at New York City’s Nintendo World Store as K’nex launched their new Mario Kart Wii Building Sets.  Now that I think about it, K’nex was also around too when I was a kid (eons ago)!  Built for children ages 6 and up, it brings Mario Kart Wii fun to a new generation.  Mario, Yoshi and Luigi make their appearance in Standard Kart Building Sets.  After a little photo op with the famous duo, the kids got into the action at the store’s building stations.  The architect in the 7-year old was out in full force while my 4-year old happily free-built along side him. Check out my handsome’s finished product on the right!  Spiffy ain’t it?! I particularly adored the little 3-piece figurines, they were so cute!  The baby was content to sit in his stroller, playing with his own wrapped Luigi, a perfect complement to the new set we got to take home.  The 7-year old was thrilled to bits. I couldn’t help get into once we were home.  It was nice having a little bonding time over K’nex and watching them all play so nicely together.  Believe me, those moments are rare to come by these days!

Building games have always been my favorite type of toys.  With an arts background, anything that inspires creativity gets a thumbs up from me.  So even if the 4-year old couldn’t read the directions to build her own Mario Kart, I was smiling at her free-build as she made her very own creation.  The sets are available currently at Nintendo World and stores all across the US.  Suggested retail prices range from $7.99 to $59.99.  For more information, check out the K’nex website!

I hope they come out with a princess and toad set soon!

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Cars 2 Video Game

{ COMMENTS ARE CLOSED FOR THIS GIVEAWAY, INSTRUCTIONS TO ENTER BELOW }

As our very first video game review, this was a great way to start.  Already huge fans of the Cars franchise, we were first in line to see the new Cars 2 movie.  The kids have been on such a Cars 2 kick, it’s been all about Finn McMissile, Holley Shiftwell, Mater and of course Lightning McQueen.

The [Wii] video game was a great way to bring the action right into our living room.  Before the wrapper was even ripped off the kids were giddy with excitement.  While the game wasn’t age appropriate for my 4 year old, she was happy to watch alongside my 7 year old as he quickly adapted to the game.  Here I was sitting with the manual, ready to read off the instructions and he SHUSHED me!  “I got it Momo!  It’s sooooo easy!”  Well excuse me Agent J!  He was right of course.  In two lickity split seconds he had it all figured out and was quickly passing all his C.H.R.O.M.E. (Command Headquarters for Recon Operations and Motorized Espionage) training missions.  What a fun game it is!  I watched the 7 year old weaving all around for a bit before I myself jumped into the action.  Hey, I’m a kid at heart!

Game Features

  • Choose from more than 20 different characters, such as Mater, Lightning McQueen and the newly introduced Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell, and train to become world class spies
  • Participate in simulated hazardous missions using high-tech gadgets
  • Perform maneuvers only Cars characters can do, such as backwards driving, air tricks, sidestepping to avoid obstacles, two-wheel driving and more

They’ll take on dangerous missions, compete to become the fastest race car in the world, or use their spy skills in exciting, action-packed combat racing and battle arenas. Players can race against friends and family in either single or multiplayer modes with up to four players to unlock challenging new tracks, characters, events and thrilling spy missions. The DS version includes exclusive global locations not seen in the film. We’re just now getting into all the different missions around the globe.  I’m loving that this game allows up to four players to make this game interactive in so many more ways. While I initially didn’t think my 4 year old was old enough for this game, the races were simple enough for her to understand the concept.  Kids these days never cease to amaze me.  They pick up technology as if they breath it!  Any game that allows all my kids to play nicely together gets a thumbs up from me!  As I’m slowly easing into the video game, I’m glad this game is align with some of our values.

The Cars 2 video game also integrates with World of Cars Online.  With the purchase of your Cars 2 game on Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Playstation3, or Xbox 360, you’ll be able to link your video game account with The World of Cars Online. Complete Levels or Circuits in your Cars 2 game and unlock coins, hood stickers, and more in The World of Cars Online! In addition, if you complete certain tasks in The World of Cars Online you’ll unlock new characters and earn special rewards in your Cars 2 video game!

We ♥ Target, We ♥ Giada!

Our ♥ of Target knows no bounds.  It’s part necessity and part obsession.  Over the years Target has had some amazing collaborations and we’re always excited to see who they team up with next.  This time they have teamed up with our favorite (and gorgeous) Food Network Chef, Giada De Laurentiis to launch Giada De Laurentiis for Target collection.

My girl and I were recently invited to Target Studios where we were introduced to Giada herself and her amazing line of products. As a TV/culinary personality, she is loveable and in person, exactly the same.  We were all ears listening to her as she took us through her new line of cookware and tools.  Some of the stand out items include the revolutionary 7″ inch Mezzaluna Knife for a ridiculously priced, only $20.79.  This knife is one of a kind and created by Giada.  Providing a great multi-function chopping ability it is also pairs with a professional chef secret, the rocking motion of a Mezzaluna.  It’s my must-have item which I have been hunting for at every Target I come across for weeks now — SOLD OUT!  Another new favorite has to be her Stainless Steel Pasta Scoop.  There will be no more draining of pasta.  Now I can safely scoop my pasta out and save that salted water for seasoning or refreshing pasta.

It’s one thing to slap your name on a piece of clothing or physical item but when it comes to food, it had better taste good too.  Giada,  with her strong Italian heritage, made sure her specialty food items would be something she could proudly serve her family.  Now while I claim not to be a connoisseur, I can be a bit of an Italian food snob.  I just most restaurants by their eggplant parmigiana (there is none better than Rosa’s Pizzeria in Maspeth, NY) or their marinara sauce.  I have recently forsaken all bottled tomato sauces for my own easy homemade sauces.  I was never able to pinpoint what about bottled tomato sauces that I didn’t like, but after hearing about her sauces I clearly understood my taste-buds missed freshness.  Giada’s Tomato Sauces are nothing short of amazing.  She spent the time with Target to source the best tomatoes she could find and not only create sauces that her family would be proud of but made sure they got to our table as fresh as possible.  At price points of $2.49 – $4, they can’t be beat!  I think I might be able to stop slaving over a stove making my own sauce at these prices.

Because it was Giada, I was willing to shed my inhibitions and do something I have never done before… eat olives.  Okay, so they weren’t whole.  But surprisingly, I couldn’t get enough of her  linguine with sun-dried tomatoes, olives and lemon.  While I could distinctly taste them in the dish, it wasn’t overwhelming and easier to digest than I expected.  In fact, I have now served it at two gatherings to date and it’s been a hit with everyone including the babies.

I was even prouder watching my girl eat her first burger.  Eating burgers aren’t like eating french fries.  I could never figure out when chicken nuggets go out the door and hamburger happy meals would be a considered option.  We’ve tried for many years, offering her time and time again, a burger.  Alas it was the pretty lady and her cocktail sized caprese burgers that made all the difference.  To this day she asks for the pretty lady’s mini burgers because no ordinary burger will do.

At our recent 4th of July soiree, there were caprese burgers and linguine with sun-dried tomatoes, olives and lemon for everyone.  What amazed me was how quick (in under 10 minutes) and easy these two dishes were to make,  I looked like a culinary genius! I took little credit for the menu and everyone thanked Giada.  Giada De Laurentiis for Target sauces, Sun-dried Tomatoes and Genovese Pesto are new staples in our house!

To recreate the magic:

Giada’s Linguine with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Olives and Lemon

  • 1 pound linguine pasta
  • 1 cup or 6oz jar of GDL for Target Sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup (4 ounces) medium green olives, pitted
  • 1 packed cup of fresh basil leaves
  • 1 garlic clove (or more if you like)
  • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice or juice from 1 large lemon
  • zest of 1 large lemon
  • ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • salt and freshly ground pepper

Cook pasta according to directions on the box for al dente.  Scoop and set aside pasta with GDL Stainless Steel Pasta Scoop.

In a food processor, combine sun-dried tomatoes, olives, basil, garlic, oil, lemon juice and lemon zest.  Pulse until blended but still chunky.

Add the tomato mixture and parmesan cheese to the pasta and toss well until pasta is coated.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Giada’s Caprese Burgers

  • 2½ pounds of ground sirloin beef
  • ¾ cup or 1 jar of GDL for Target Genovese Pesto
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1½ teaspoons kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 (7 to 8 ounce) ball fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 8 – ¼ inch thick slices, patted dry with paper towels (freeze the mozzarella to make cutting easier)
  • ½ cup mayonaise
  • 8 large fresh basil leaves
  • extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling
  • 8- 3 inch square pieces of tomator or plain foccaccia bread, halved or 8 hamburger buns, halved
  • 4 medium tomatoes, sliced into ¼ inch thick rounds, to yield 16 slices

In a large bowl, combine beef, pesto, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.

Form the mixture into 8 – 4″ diameter patties, approximately ¾” thick.

Grill for 5 minutes and flip.  Cook for an additional 3 minutes.

Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on top and continue to cook through and the cheese is slightly melted.  Allow the burger to rest for 5 minutes.

Drizzle the cut side of the bread with olive oil and grill until lightly toasted.  Spread the mayonnaise over the bottom halves of the grilled bread.  Place the burgers on top and add 2 tomato slices and basil leaf.

Add the top halves of the bread and serve.

Buon Appetito!

SPOTTED: Going Green with Nissan Leaf

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to check out the all new Nissan Leaf.  I was totally intrigued by a 100% electric car.  Although electric cars are not new to the market, it certainly seems to be picking up in popularity these days and this is the first MASS-marketed electric car to date.  Right off the bat we were told this electric car is not for everyone.  With only 100 miles to a full charge, this is great for 95% of America which drives less than that on any given day.  For those who do longer commutes, this isn’t for them.  That said, my skepticism was risen as my mother-in-law once did an average of 200 miles a day for her commute to and from work.  A fuel efficient car in my mind was ideal for her.  Putting that aside, I thought about my own daily car usage and surmised that this car might in fact be great for me.  With trips to drop the girl off to pre-kindergarten in September and a wishful job in her area, even if I made a stop at the mall or grocery store, I’d only clock about 50-60 miles.

Well that’s great and all, but how is it powered?  Electricity, yes… but how much and from where?  I found out it has a 24kWh lithium ion battery which fully charges for an approximate 100 miles.  On a 220v outlet, like the ones used to power your air conditioner and washer/dryer units, the Leaf will power up fully in 7 hours.  It can also be powered via your standard 110v home outlet for 16 hours.  What if you’re out and about, gone a little too far from home, where can you pick up a quick charge?  Nissan has teamed up with your local Walmart’s and Kmarts and other shopping centers to install their universal electric charging stations.  Not only can Nissan Leaf’s charge up, but so can other electric cars.  Using the commercially zoned 430v, the Nissan Leaf can be fully powered in an amazing 25 minutes.  Now that’s my kind of speed!  Unfortunately the 430v charge is only available commercially and while the charge is free while you do your shopping, the parking spot may cost you around $3-$5.

The real savings here is in the cost of gas.  At the national average of $3.89 a gallon, the Nissan Leaf is tooting an amazing 18¢ per kilowatt.  A full charge, equivalent to approximately 4 gallons of gas, will cost you approximately $4.50 to the $16.00 for gas.

So is the 100 mile per charge a true 100 miles?  I was told that the car can actually average as much as 130 miles per charge, but depending on the driver and their preferences for speed, heat or air conditioning, they can safely guarantee at least 100 miles on a full charge.  Making the car as efficient as possible, it also passively self charges — regenerative braking — when the car is stopped or cruising, the battery turns into a generator, as well as converting solar energy to electricity for use (in the SL model).

The car itself was impressive too.  The seats are make from partially recycled material such as plastic bottles — we loved that!  It seats a roomy 5 passengers in its super quiet cabin.  I was actually quite taken with how much room it had.  With my girl in the back, I still could imagine my other two fitting, car seats and all, quite comfortably.  As with other eco-cars, the drive itself was rather unassuming.  Aside from the dash turning on, you’ll never actually hear it turning on.  It actually takes some getting use to.  With only 3 modes — drive, reverse and park, it’s simplicity at its best.  You can still have all the bells and whistles that you’ve come to love in cars like a navigation system which notifies you where the nearest charging stations are, bluetooth phone systems and homelink transreceiver (SL model).

I was so excited to tell my husband all about it.  What I got instead was an interesting debate.  As a typical male, he made a lot of really great points which took my excitement down a few notches.  He loved how far electric cars have come but he said the real value would be for the drivers like his mother that do the long commutes.  They would see the payoffs in spades.  He felt if any car company  could get a charge to go up to 200-300 miles, more like a gas car, they would have a really good lock on the market.

He wasn’t as impressed by the thrown in charging station as I was.  I thought it was great that I never had to go searching for a gas station.  The car would always be ready for me when I needed it.  He raised questions about the installation of a 220v line to charge the car.  He felt this was a necessary install to minimize the actual charge time but could be a costly investment on top of the cost of the actual car.  He described that for ourselves, our line would have to be dug underground from our house to the garage and could cost us a couple thousand dollars to run this line.  He felt charging the car for 16 hours on a 110 line was shear ridiculousness and should only be done if you’re visiting a friend and need a little boost to get you home.  Well little did he know that Nissan actually helps with a home assessment to help identify what is needed to make the home Nissan Leaf ready.

He also wanted to know if installing the station locked him into continually buying Nissan electric cars, or was it also a universal unit?  It’s a universal babe!  He did like the idea of charging stations at grocery stores, etc., It was smart business, charging while you shop.  Although when we looked at the map, only a small percentage of the 13,000 charging stations being installed in 2012 will be Level 1 DC Quick Charges, sadly -zero- in New York.  He said if all the charging stations were the 430kWh Quick Charges and as easy to find as a grocery store, that would be ideal.  Soooo if Target had a charging station….

He agreed that this car would be great for someone like me to drive our girl to and from school and possibly my new job.  He was still worried about the car running out of “gas” as conditions can greatly effect the actual mileage gained from a full charge.  On a summer day, cooling the car can utilizing additional energy stores as well as a larger cargo weight after say shopping at our wholesale club.  When I told him you could pre-program the car, while charging over night to “wake-up” and heat/cool the car while still hooked up to power, reducing power usage, he was impressed.

I was actually amazed to learn that the Nissan Leaf had several warning mechanisms to a gas-powered cars one:

  • The LEAF on-board navigation system is “smart” enough to tell you based on destination input and state of charge whether you have the range to “make it,” and if not, search for nearby charging station along the route, displaying your current range throughout the drive
  • The telematics system called CARWINGS® will alert owners of the need to charge and find charging stations before it runs out of charge
  • When your battery has 4kWh remaining, your empty warning light will come on. A notification on your screen will indicate where to find all charging stations within range.
  • In the event that your battery becomes critically low, power limitation mode will automatically minimize your energy consumption and reduce your speed to help you get to a charging dock (like turning off AC)
  • The “trickle charger” for a 110/120V 20-Amp dedicated outlet comes with the vehicle for emergencies to plug-in if necessary at slower rate.

If all that warning isn’t enough, it’s a good thing they throw in 3-years complimentary roadside assistance!  If there were more quick charge stations, I would definitely be an early adopter.  At an approximate $33,000 sticker price, I felt it incredibly reasonable.  With the Federal incentives up to $8500 in savings and additional incentives by state, it’s a NO BRAINER! For this NYC family, we get Unlimited use of Long Island Expressway HOV lanes by vehicle displaying clean vehicle sticker.  Wowzers!  The husband never considered a hybrid because of the miniscule savings (approximately an additional 5 miles to the gallon), not to mention the higher price tag because of the novelty.  He was definitely open to an electric car after learning all about the Nissan Leaf but convenience was his priority.  Actually he is more worried about me pushing the car to its limits.  I’m a little infamous for ignoring the empty tank warning. He he he!

Having seen charging stations all over California, I’m excited to see the whole country adapt.    I certainly think it’s time for an electric car.  So maybe my husband isn’t an early-adapter.  I was definitely impressed with how far it’s come and it definitely will come into consideration when we decide to purchase another family car.  It gave me a lot of food for thought.

I’m always looking for ways to go a little greener and this would definitely be one in a BIG way.

VISITING: Bob the Builder Splash Works

The family and I were invited to the Grand Opening Celebration of Bob the Builder’s Splash Works at Splash Down Beach yesterday.  This is Bob the Builder’s first permanent amusement attraction in North America.  Splash Works is a 1,600 square feet Bob the Builder themed spray & play area geared towards kids ages 1-5 years.  Perfect for my brood!  Anything that lets the infant has fun along side his siblings is great for our ears.  We were so excited to check it out!  With over 50 interactive features, it included Bob’s tool shed play structure, two slides, tipping buckets, tot bounces, dancing water, and loads of geysers.  While I thought all the features were randomly turning on and off, I learned that it is actually powered by the “Rain Brain” computer system which allows features to respond to children’s movements and step activators that trigger different water effects throughout the play area. Only an hour and a half outside of the city, this waterpark is a hidden gem!  There is something for everyone!  After spending the morning at Bob the Builder’s Splash Works, we took some time to explore the rest of the park.  Perfect for families of all ages, we particularly loved the Shipwreck Lagoon.  Water heights never went above 2 feet and let the infant feel as big as his sister.  He was fearlessly entering the water, through waterfalls and sliding down the slides.  There were tons of lifeguards around and life jackets abundant. If you just want to chillax, visit Croc Creek and just cruise along the lazy river.  There are dumping buckets, fountains and geysers to cool you off along the way.  The infant was squealing with delight each time we stumbled upon one. The toddler was all about the Monster Wave Pool.  She’s worked herself up to it and now loves hopping over incoming waves with her daddy. We had hardly visited half the park before the infant needed a nap, but that’s a-OK by us!  We’ll definitely be back real soon.  At $29.99 for guests over 42″ and $25.99 for guests under 42″, it beats many of the other parks for summer time fun.  We also loved the many restrooms equipped with changing areas and plenty of seating to rest and regroup before engaging in more water fun.

REVIEW: Maclaren Twin Triumph

and what are you looking at?

Ask me a few years ago, pre-parenthood, and I would have been swearing off twin strollers. I would never be a Twinnie.  The parents wheeling around their wide load as if they owned the road, expecting everyone to move out of their way — I loathed them.   Even when I because a parent of two kids, I did everything to avoid twin strollers.  If I HAD to go out alone with two kids, I’d grudgingly strap on the carrier and push the stroller.  Or I’d beg/bribe the toddler to walk while the infant was strapped to my single and pray that when she wised up, that I wouldn’t be too tired to carry the infant.  It wasn’t until the opportunity/necessity of one that I realized what I had been missing out on.

The debate arrives on whether a side by side or a front/back twinnie is better.  My first inkling is the front/back is better for the wide load fearing me but I was assured, they were wide in other ways.  Friends have recommended the Maclaren Twin Triumph before and told me, once I tried it, I wouldn’t go back.  Here we are road-testing the Maclaren Twin Triumph with my eyebrows raised.  It’s wide for sure, but not noticeably so that I would cringe.  In fact, it felt just right.  Taking it for a run in our local shopping mall, it maneuvered like a pro.  I wasn’t taking up the road, in fact I was starting to hold my head up high.  I was the smart mom with two quiet kids sitting in their stroller and I was getting things done! I felt productive and my kids were both equally happy and content in their own seats.

Twin Strollers are also often equated with bulk but the umbrella stroller detail gives it all the edge it needs.  Not only does it play the role of two strollers in one, it collapses into the size of one!  Gone are the days of a trunk full of strollers.  We can actually fit things in there again!  I know, I’m a little crazy about trunk space, but if you haven’t have any in a while, you begin to have a whole new appreciation for it.  I had almost forgotten what it was like to have a trunk, as most parents do.

One of my biggest peeves about most strollers on the market is the lack of removable seat liners and Maclaren, unbeknown to me until now, has an entire line of beautifully designed reversible liners.  All reasonably priced, since I needed two, at below $20 each is a real steal.   They have a huge selection of designs, something for everyone one and several complimentary patterns to match every stroller.  My two kids aren’t the neatest of buggers and these liners will get good use making our Twin Triumph look tip top for even longer.  Also discovered is their line of reversible buggy blankets.  We’re totally diggin Paris and Hong Kong.

When my husband said

Get rid of the single stroller and stick with the double.

, I was shocked.  Even my husband had become a twinnie.  He wanted to add his pro – saving his back every time one of the kids tires of walking and there is only one stroller seat they are both fighting over.  In his words, “Priceless!”

PROS:

  • Incredibly compact fold, I can actually see the bottom of my trunk.  With two separate strollers, trunk space was prime real estate.
  • It’s empowering, not in the own the road way, but I can go out alone, confidently, with two kids.  It affords me the freedom to
  • Loads of storage space below.  With more room, comes more stuff!
  • Pockets in the hood!  Great to stuff keys and or cell phone within easy reach.
  • Actually fits the toddler quite comfortably!  Although appearing wide in size, the seats themselves looked small, but then again, so are the kids!

CONS:

  • I’ve become so comfortable with the one-handed folds.  It takes a few maneuvers to open and close the stroller.  The issue though is not exclusive to this stroller, it’s with all umbrella strollers in general.  While the husband usually is the griper about folds, haven’t heard one peep out of him despite so.
  • Not a complete necessity if each child has their own designated seat, but if you need to adjust straps, it requires some maneuvering.
  • Love the removable liner, but installation and removal isn’t as easy as I would hope.
  • Wish there was an included cup holder.

If you’re not sure about twin strollers, step out of your comfort zone and give the Maclaren Twin Triumph (retail $275) a spin.  As my husband said, “You’ll never want to go back.“  The new found freedom I have with this stroller is just so liberating.  I am no longer a prisoner in my own home, or tied to the availability of a sitter.  I can happily go out confidently with two kids and not break a sweat.  This is priceless indeed!

Getting Green with with Little Tikes

Now that’s schools out, how does one keep the kiddies entertained in this summer heat?  Little Tikes has got us covered all summer long.  It’s not just all about fun, there has to be some balance.  Maybe with a little housework?  The toddler felt so professional with her Little Tikes Garden Tool Set by Imperial Toy, helping her father dig and install the new fencing around the house.  It was hard work, but so much fun!  I was amazed at how strong this little shovel (and rake) was.  She kept pace with her daddy, shovel by shovel and he credits her for making his job that much easier.

How to relax after an afternoon full of shoveling… Perhaps a little gardening?  Our garden experience thus far hasn’t been so successful, no thanks to my lack of watering skills.  Perhaps with this Little Tikes Garden Watering Can by Imperial Toy, we can sprinkle a little magic?!  With her very own can, who can’t get inspired to water her plants everyday even in the blistering summer heat!  It comes with a variety of pour options from a sprinkle to a full on waterfall for watering the most delicate of flowers to our hearty shrubs.  Our plants just might have a fighting chance this year afterall!

There’s gotta be some play in summer, and what better way than with bubbles.  It’s fun for kids of all ages and everyone down to the infant got into it.  This toy is shear brilliance and had us all excited.  All kids love big kid tools and this tool is as realistic as it is fun.  Fill up it’s “gas” chamber with bubbles and power it up!  Whether its blowing the Little Tikes Garden Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower by Imperial Toy or chasing them, battery powered, it provides millions of bubbles and hours of entertainment as this mom sits curbside with her glass of lemonade.

What a wonderful way to spend summer!  Little Tykes Garden toys are available online at Amazon.com and at retailers such as Toys R Us and Target.  Get in gear for summer with Little Tykes by Imperial Toy!
