Air Car!

This post comes courtesy from my websurfing Dad. He found this cool new/old toy — The Air Car!

The original idea was concieved in 1932 by J.M. Custer of Piggott, Arkansas. Using compressed air, he used an engine that resembled a radial airplane motor in appearance. Occupying the same space as a standard gasoline motor, it powered the car for 500 miles at a speed of 35 miles an hour.

This “old” technology is now resurfacing in the US thanks to Magnetic Air Cars, Inc., who is developing an air-powered prototype car in Silicon Valley. They believe that their design will be sufficient to power a modern new vehicle, or retrofit a used vehicle — even a large SUV or truck.

Already set to go into commercial production onto the streets of India, the Air Car, by Luxembourg-based Moteur Developement Int. (MDI) also runs on compressed air technology.

Problem Solved…

In the ever long chemical fight, the battleground this time is laundry. In my quest for safe baby laundry detergent, this time, not only for Ava, but for my sensitive skin as well, I fell in love with Seventh Generations Free & Clear Laundry Detergent. Though Amazon’s Ship & Save program I was able to order in bulk. Their commitment to minimal packaging and my less driving back and forth to Target and contributing to the Carbon Footprint, I found to be a nice middle ground.

Although in previous years I loved my fabric softener, I wasn’t quite sold on the chemical used necessary for softening and de-static of my laundry, especially for my pure baby. My husband, a lover of static-free clothing wasn’t too happy about this UNTIL… I was recently introduced to an amazing brand. I had heard of this brand, but hadn’t seen it anywhere — for good reason, this is only sold through private distributors in a Mary Kay and Tupperware fashion. Received as a gift, I tried for the first time their HE Laundry Detergent and their… Fabric Softener. While I loved their detergent, the real star was their Fabric Softener Sheets.
At first looking at them, I was a little reluctant. They looked like wax paper sheets and the idea of them combined with heat in my dryer… didn’t seem like a good idea. Upon reading the box… I was a bit more open minded. Veggie based and biodegradable, they break up into two pieces in the dry for maximum distribution of soft and static free goodness. My favorite part, its unscented! Once you’re done, you can pop them in your recycling bin and you know how I love my recycling bin! I loved it so much, I decided to become a Shaklee Independent distributor myself! More on this to come…

Happy Green Thanksgiving…Organic, Free Range vs. Conventional

My little adventure in Turkey making began a few years ago when a dear friend and her amazing Thanksgiving spread inspired me. Now with my own family and ever the entertainer in me, I made my first turkey last year to rave reviews.

I chose a Willie Bird Organic & Free Range Turkey (sold also at Williams Sonoma and other outlets) per my friend swearing that it makes a more tender and juicy bird and last year’s result made me a believer. What is an Organic and Free Range Turkey? They are free-roaming (on the range) Turkey’s that are fed grains grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Blind taste testers claim the Organic & Free Range birds were richer and juicier in taste than the Conventional Soup pumped birds – you know which ones we’re talking about.

Being the over-achiever that I am, I also suggest brining your Turkey overnight for a more juicier bird.

This is the recipe for success I used last year, taken from Williams-Sonoma:

Soaking the turkey in a saltwater brine produces tender, juicy meat. In this recipe our brine mixture also includes buttermilk, which adds flavor to the turkey and helps keep the meat moist.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups turkey brine

1 quart water

4 quarts buttermilk

1 fresh turkey, 16 to 18 lb., neck, heart and gizzard removed (reserved,
if desired)

4 Tbs. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature

Directions:

In a small saucepan over high heat, combine the turkey brine and water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring often, until the brine dissolves, 5 to 10 minutes. Let the brine mixture cool to room temperature. In a large pot, stir together the brine mixture and buttermilk.

Rinse the turkey inside and out with cold water and place in a large brining bag. Carefully pour the buttermilk brine mixture into the bag. Seal the bag, pressing out the air, and place in a large stockpot or other container large enough to hold the turkey. Refrigerate for 24 to 36 hours, turning occasionally.

Remove the turkey from the brine; discard the brine. Rinse the turkey inside and out with cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Trim off and discard the excess fat. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in a large roasting pan. Rub the skin evenly with the butter. Truss the turkey as desired using kitchen twine. Let the turkey stand at room temperature for 1 hour.

Position a rack in the lower third of an oven and preheat to 400°F.

Roast the turkey for 30 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 325ºF and continue roasting, basting every 30 minutes with the pan juices. If the breast begins to cook too quickly, tent it loosely with aluminum foil. After about 2 hours of total roasting time, begin testing for doneness by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the breast and thigh, away from the bone. The breast should register 165°F and the thigh, 175°F. Total roasting time should be 3 to 4 hours.

Transfer the turkey to a carving board, cover loosely with foil and let rest for 20 to 30 minutes before carving. Serves 12 to 14.

Antibacterial Soap can be TOXIC?!

Triclosan NEVER!

If you’re like many families you think antibacterials are protecting you and your family from getting sick. WRONG! The antibacterial agent known as Triclosan contained in many household brands, has been found to be especially toxic to a developing fetus or child. Tests show it is often found in breast milk(!). Antibacterial products are everywhere from everyday products such as liquid hand soap, dishwasher detergent, cutting boards (microban), mattresses, bathtubs, and even shower curtains.

The Environmental Working Group reports that Triclosan is no more effective at eliminating germs than good old soap and water. Alarmingly, Triclosan has been linked to cancer in lab animals as well as liver and inhalation toxicity. When disposed of, it is toxic to aquatic life, breaking down into a form of chloroform when mixed with water from our tap (ie. from washing our hands with antibacterial hand soaps) add UV rays and you get dioxin, another toxic compound.

How do you escape this polluting predicament? Harnessing that innocuous household herb thyme, a natural antiseptic that eliminates germs. CleanWell’s line of Foaming Hand Soaps and Sanitizers utilizes that little herbs abilities in a BIG way, cleaning you and your family’s hands without dirtying your conscience or the environment. Check them out at greenbaby-nyc.com. We just love all the fabulous scents!
