BOOK REVIEW: That's Why We Don't Eat Animals

BOOK REVIEW: That's Why We Don't Eat Animals

{ disclosure : author contacted directly, self-bought book, no discount or incentives received }

twwdea

When I was told to check out this book, I was intrigued.  You see, I’m not a vegetarian, but not for lack of trying on my parents part.  It did successfully rub off on my sister who has been one since the tender age of 5 years old.  Through out her life she’s had to respond to questions like why doesn’t she eat meat?  What kind of vegetarian are you?  Do you eat fish?  Do you eat eggs?  It never bothered her to answer these questions before, she’d even give flippant answers like… just because…  Being her sister, we’re quite close too, I’ve often had to make dishes just for her on special occasions like birthday or thanksgiving dinners.

Now my precocious two year old is beginning to notice that when her Auntie comes over, things are a little different.  The questions are, why is she eating that?  When I make a dish just for her aunt I get – Why, is she special? Let me tell you, flippant answers don’t fly with a two-year old.  My sister tried to explain to her, in terms that two year olds might get and I’m thinking… oh please don’t scare her or make her all weird and picky about food again!  Nonetheless, she tried to no avail to make my little one understand in gentle, simpler terms.

When I happened upon this book, I rang my sister up joyfully.  I found a solution.  Since we’ve been actively reading at the library, the bookstore and right before bed time, its become her favorite activity.  All the books get a little ad libbing on my part… whether its counting the numbers of items, like pigs on a farm, or identifying items, shapes and colors, while making the storyline adapt to her.  ie.,  Dora’s getting a baby brother, just like my Ava… or That’s why we don’t eat animals, just like Auntie.   My most generous sister offered to buy the book for my little Ava, but I beat her to the punch.

Written by author, Ruby Roth, ”That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans,
Vegetarians, and All Living Things” is a beautifully, gorgeously  illustrated book that addresses the emotional lives of animals, factory farming, the environment, and endangered species in regards to the foods we eat.  It is also endorsed by some of my favorite activists Jane Goodall and Ed Begley Jr.  I appreciated it’s gentle approach to explaining these important concepts while not pushing her to become a vegetarian, unless she wants to of course.  The “What Else Can You Do?”  end page gives good ideas on how anyone and everyone can still participate towards a more animal friendly life.  While some of it might still be over my little Ava’s head for a two-year old, the book is heirloom quality and destined to be read over and over again and a staple on her bookshelf for years to come.

You can read more about the author and her book at: http://WeDontEatAnimals.com/ I purchased my copy at amazon.com.

GIVEAWAY: Peter Rabbit Organics

Peter Rabbit Organics Fruit Pouch Selections

If your child is anything like mine, you’re probably struggling like I am to get them to eat their fruits and veggies.  I’ve resorted to disguising when I can and my success rate is still questionable.  Genius things like juice pouches which contain a full serving of fruits and vegetables and my latest find Peter Rabbit Organics Fruit Pouches are perfect for kids like mine.  The minute I opened the box, my daughter was begging to have one… the “pink” one of course.  Boy did she love it!  Similar to squeezable drink pouches, she walked around the house sucking on the thing, only giving it up once she was done.  It was an instant hit!  I, of course, loved that it was organic.  I definitely make my share of the effort to make sure she gets as much organics into her as possible and limiting/balancing what I know most of which she will consume is not.  Yes, regaining some of that control.  The pouches are perfect on the go snacks, no added sugar and definitely not diluted with water or juices – simply PURE fruit – that don’t need to be refrigerated.  Simply toss into her school bag or your own bag and you’re off.  I’ll even admit to eating one or two.  Being 6 months pregnant, I often find myself running low on energy and in dire need of food.  The little portable fruit pouches were the perfect pick me up.

Peter Rabbit Organics is a small privately owned company based in the UK.  Their lives are filled with kids everywhere… the perfect inspiration and audience for their delicious fruit pouches.  We’re thrilled to offer to (3) of our lucky readers a chance to win a Peter Rabbit Organics Sampler to try all three of their scrumptious flavors.  If you can’t wait to try it, find out where to get it in your neighborhood at: http://www.peterrabbitorganics.com/where-to-buy.  It is also available through Amazon.com.

To ENTER, from now until September 26th, leave a comment on how you get your kids to eat their daily fruit and vegetable requirements  and you’ll have a chance to win ONE of Three Peter Rabbit Organics Samplers.  Get up to (two) bonus entry if you follow me on twitter @greenbaby_nyc and re-tweet this giveaway as well as becoming a fan on FacebookGiveaway only open to those with U.S. addresses. Win a SOYJOY Prize Pack – Good for your Body + Soul!

Picture 2This weekend I hosted a SOYJOY House Party.  We had everyone from Daddies, Mommies and babies stretching Yoga and enjoying our SPA-BQ… Yes you read right… SPA -B – Q. We made this a party for everyone!  In actuality, I used the BBQ part to lure the men in because health education is for EVERYONE!  We munched on everything from edamame to guacamole, roasted corn on the cob and drank everything from soy milk (the Chinese supermarket kind) to organic juices from my own pantry.  We played games with prizes such as a Yoga Mat w/carrier, SELF Magazine’s Ultimate De-Stress Yoga DVD, Real Simple Water Bottle (Jug if anyone asks me) and a SOYJOY Apron.  I didn’t hear any complaints afterwards – to good food and good health!

selection of our SPA-B-Q Menuspabq_food

group

Being Chinese, SOY is practically a staple in our diet.  But in the form we eat it, I’m not sure its always so healthy (soy sauce, fermented soy pasted – definitely not made from whole soy)… but some things like tofu, edamame and soy drinks are.  Being a vegetable I just assumed it was healthy but because it’s such a pale green, I usually dismissed its hidden health benefits.  Did you know Soy is good for the HEART?!  It contains soy protein, heart healthy fats including omega-3 fatty acids and other vitamins and minerals including folate, potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and calcium.  They are cholesterol free, low in saturated fat, and a good source of fiber.  Soy is also rich in isoflavones – plant-based compounds with antioxidant properties that may help support bone health.  Being pregnant I know all of that is good for me!  SoyJoy bars are the perfect nutritious on the go snack.  I have to say with everyone sampling all the delicious SoyJoy bars, my own little Ava didn’t want to be left out.  Since it wasn’t super sweet like some of her other snack bars I was surprised how much she like them – her favorite being berry.  The most exotic of the  flavors was the Mango Coconut which I found funny that only the women were willing to try it.

I’m sharing the love and you have a chance to win your very own SOYJOY Prize Pack which includes the following:

- Assortment of SOYJOY bars:

  • Berry
  • Strawberry
  • Mango Coconut
  • Peanut Chocolate Chip
  • Apple Walnut
  • Raisin Almond

- SOYJOY Measuring Spoon

- SOYJOY / RedBook Headband

- Kate Geagan’s Go Green Get Lean Book – awesome book!

- Yoga Morn-Nite DVD Journal

An actual fond childhood memory…

So there I was all set to check out at Whole Foods. Already beating myself up for all the extras I just threw into my cart (ie., a small tiramisu, package of Tate’s Bakeshop Chocolate Chip Cookies, guacamole, cranberry scones and garlic naan!)… I went solely for the purpose of buying juice for Ava and somehow I walked out spending almost $75… argh! While flirting with the little toddler Ava’s age, sitting in the cart in front of me, when I happened to peek at items on the conveyor belt… I’m always a sucker for cute interesting packaging and the Smooze Fruit Ice box caught my eye.

Now Ava recently has been obsessed with frozen desserts. It began when her grandmother began sharing her Drumsticks, the ice cream cone sundae frozen treat. It was a nightly ritual much to my dismay. Now I love seeing my daughter so happy, but you know that nagging Mommy feeling I can’t ignore?! I knew her dietary consumption was way off kilter… A few weeks ago I started making my own fruit ice pops with molds purchased from Target. I was thrilled to discover that its just the frozen part in general that my daughter likes. It doesn’t HAVE to be ice cream. She’ll happily eat Italian ices (Ralph’s of course in sophisticated flavors like black raspberry and passion fruit), pre-packaged frozen fruit juice sticks, etc.,

After discovering some frozen strawberries in my fridge due to a malfunction, I ventured into my first homemade pop experiment of strawberries, orange juice, a little lemon and a smidge of sugar… it was a smashing hit! Being ever the modern mom, I found a happy medium to making my own when I can and purchasing somewhat healthy versions in my grocer’s freezer aisle. That’s where Smooze comes in! Maybe its the Asian in me… but the flavors are mouth-watering… passion fruit, mango, pineapple & pink guava all blended with coconut milk. It’s perfect for the kids with dietary constraints. It is dairy free, gluten free, GM free as well as 0% cholesterol, 0% trans fats and Vegan.

Okay so all that matters little to the kids, but the packaging takes me back to the old days in elementary school where we’d occasionally get a triangle frozen treat. My guess is that it was made of high fructose corn syrup and other sweet goodies… but not Smooze! I read some reviews that kids might not like the flavors as its subtle and not too sweet but I think differently. It may be that my Ava is still drinking juice highly diluted with water, but she has been exposed to the sweetness of ice cream and Italian ices… and yet she devoured her smooze and asked for more… I was happy to see her open to different and unique flavor combinations such as the mango & coconut smooze she ate.

So in addition to the Smooze Fruit Ice, which is sure to be a staple in our freezer, I also whipped up a peach, mango, OJ fruit ice to jazz things up a little… God, I love my mini food processor!

Kid's Restaurant Week

Have you been feeling a little uncool, out of the loop ever since you became a parent? Yea, me too. No more am I the in-the-know on the latest, greatest and newest restaurants in ever so hip NYC. Unfortunately my only association with any culinary delights is an indulgence in the late night TV of the Food Network. Thank God for Bobby Flay, Tyler Florence and friends! I dream of being a gourmet chef and every once in a while if I fancy a trip into the city’s many architecturally beautiful culinary sites, I get to pretend. Not to mention I fear becoming that uncool parent… so happily I squeal with delight in Cookie & Gourmet Magazine’s Kid Restaurant Week. Starting June 20-28th in NYC, some of my favorite spots including BLT Fish have opened up their doors at a kid-friendly time of 5-7pm with special menus priced for this economy – kids pay their age! Time to test their grown-up manners, Parents get to indulge in adult fares that don’t include chicken nuggets or mac and cheese (unless its got lobster or truffles in it) while their kids enjoy a taste of the good life Mom & Dad use to live once upon a time… Another reason to indulge is proceeds are given to local charities… check it out!

Mmmm Mmmmm Good!

It’s funny how planning kid’s birthday party really is more for the parents than for the kids… I find I always try to out do myself… but yet somehow it always winds up a half spectacular half plain effort… I guess that could be said to be my style. It’s almost like the best part of having kids is planning all their wonderful birthday parties. Ava is only just shy of 2 years old, with her shindig in just a few weeks and I’m already thinking about what to do for her 3rd birthday party… Even crazier, I’m thinking about her yet to be born sibling’s momentous 100 day celebration. Even if it’s not a boy – it’s sure to be spectacular for sure – at least I hope so!

This year Ava’s 2nd birthday is a Hello Kitty Circus Themed party at the Long Island Children’s Museum. As far as the circus theme goes, it only goes as far as her invitations and perhaps the labels on the gift bags. There will be Hello Kitty Tattoos and a matching pinata… hopefully some themed treats to go in it. That’s where the spectacular-ness ends… sadly it lacks in what was envisioned… the guest list limited to only family and close friends, which meant her due date buddies only – yea all 12 of them! I had envisioned her classmates (from daycare) and all her little friends running wild in the museum… sadly 15 kids was the max, and I would have been closer to 40 kids… who knew my little one would be so popular! With a couple more weeks to go and still time to make minor improvements here and there – not to mention still order the birthday cake ~ argh! – I’m trying to think of a more personal touch. I contemplated personalized M&M’s with Ava’s adorable little mug on it… but thought that might actually be a better idea for her siblings 100 day celebration – think Red & Gold M&M’s with Chinese proverbs… kitchy and cute~! Browsing through a friend’s scrap booking catalog I was suddenly inspired to make treat bags… filled with either kettle corn popcorn or roasted circus peanuts or even yummier… my favorite Tate’s Bake Shop cookies! which leads to what I stumbled upon, the recipe for Tate’s Bake Shop Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup salted butter, 2 sticks
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease or line 2-3 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  3. In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking soda and salt.
  4. In another large bowl, cream the butter and sugars, then add the water and vanilla. Mix until just combined.
  5. Add eggs to the butter mixture and mix them lightly.
  6. Stir in the flour mixture. When flour is mixed in, fold in the chocolate chips.
  7. Drop 2 tablespoonfuls of the cookie dough 2-inches apart onto prepared cookie sheets. Make sure the cookie sheets are well greased. I like to use parchment paper.
  8. Bake for 12-17 minutes or until the edges and centers of the cookies are golden brown.
  9. Remove from oven and allow to cool on wire racks.

French Fries are not a Vegetable… Part I

Oh you didn’t know? Neither did I! Okay, maybe I did… This blog is turning into a confessional, I am a terrible mom… This past Easter weekend our family took a road trip to Baltimore. In preparing for the trip, I packed ample amounts of snacks, waters, sodas, organic milk etc., Notice aside from the organic milk and water, everything else was crap. I did attempt to bring some organic cookies, but they sealed the bag so good I couldn’t even get it open. So when Ava beckoned for a snack, she got either a lollipop or Cheese Doodles (the crunchy kind – yum!). Confession Alert – I am a junk food addict! I actually had to face my terrible and subsequently Ava’s terrible eating habits after she woke up from a nap while we were eating “All You Can Eat” seafood at a Buffet. She of course woke up cranky, and God forbid anything standing in our way of getting our fill of crab legs – we feared a meltdown. After several attempts at baiting her with her favorite, fish – she firmly ignored us – we baited her with ice cream. Yes, yes, shame on us. If it helps our case, she didn’t want to eat anything at all, can you blame us for trying to get something into her stomach?! Midway through her second dish we were able to steer her to an ear of corn. Thank God she ate that with as much robustness as she took to the ice cream. For the remainder of our trip I tried to refrain from giving her any soda, if she really wanted the bubbly, she had my club soda. Sadly I recently learned even club soda, while low in sugar content gave them phosphoric acid which I hear they shouldn’t have in any excess quantity. So much for being one step better!

Making me feel even worse as a mom, during our Shaklee product launch call, they were quoting statistics and facts like:
French Fries—The most common vegetable source for kids today
Soft Drinks—Most 8-year-olds drink soft drinks daily and each 12 oz. serving contains 9 tsp. of sugar; Phosphorous in soft drinks can leach calcium out of bones
Candy—69% of 19- to 24-month-olds eat candy or dessert on any given day
Junk Food—25% of calories on a typical school day come from junk food

If this was a trial, I’d be guilty guilty guilty on all counts… sigh! I use cookies and lollipops as motivation or reward for potty training. I think, oh I’m just giving her a sip of soda, it’s not a lot and once in a while becomes anytime we’re out and we’re indulging ourselves. You know, this just might explain Mommy’s muffin top…hahaha! You are what you eat and your kids… will become you.

If there is one great thing that I thought Ava was doing right with her diet, other than organic dairy was her intake of fish. That girl can eat fish! She would opt to eat that above everything else – the Baltimore trip was a fluke. We have even taken to hiding the filet for last and portioning out ours before she sees it, otherwise that fish monster won’t share. Not even a bite. Suddenly it occured to me, what about the mercury content? I am no fish expert and who knows what “sale” fish my MIL purchased because by the time she’s done with it, often you can’t identify what it started out as. She swears she is getting the “right” fishes, but this is the woman who bought J&J recently completely dismissing my warnings. So…. insert pregnant pause… hrmmm… So that made me excited for ShakleeKids Mighty Smart DHA chews, but now I have to worry, can you get too much DHA?

In an effort to be more nutritionally balanced I made a trip to Whole Foods. What did I walk out with?! Junk Food! Organic junk food if that helps. Yes a delicious selection of rice crispy like treats in peanut butter and berry, more of the cherry oatie cookies Ava likes so much, a tiramisu cake for me and some Horizon Organic Yogurt Tuberz. I think the yogurt was the healthiest if I wanted to give myself some credit at all. All the while nagging in the back of my mind the fact she doesn’t like fresh fruit at all! How is that possible?! I love fresh fruit! I love berries of all kinds, asian pears, watermelons, etc., Ava’s idea of fruit includes Target’s brand of organic fruit strips. While it is 100% fruit, I somehow believe eating the real deal is still better.

Stay tuned as this mommy tries and figures out how to get some fruits and veggies into her finicky sweets loving toddler…

Good Food Near YOU!

This site was made for ME! and you too of course… Confession Alert! I do, more often than I should, take my daughter and nephew to the Golden Arches. It’s a crutch I know. Figuring out what they will or will not eat is too much sometimes and I know I am “golden” with the nuggets. I also fiend sudden memory loss when it comes to choosing healthier eating options for them on the road. Now I have no excuse, with the GoodFoodNearYou program downloaded on my iPhone (or Blackberry too!), similar to my other favorite UrbanSpoon, you will see a selection of healthy restaurants in your area. Sometimes the Golden Arches are the only nearby choice but you are given healthier options to consider – choose wisely! Your results can be sorted by distance, calories, fat content, or carbs. The GoodFoodNearYou database includes over 200,000 US restaurant locations and 33,000 food items. Since we’re planning to be quite the road -trippers, I’m grateful to see sorting options by Landmarks (even airports) too – Disney anyone?! Now who’s the Health-conscious mom now!

Gimme some SUGAR!

Are all sugars created equal? My Anatomy & Physiology class has me thinking about sugar lately and I have a major major sugar tooth too… monomers, polymers, glucose, fructose, sucrose… etc., any way you like it, you can’t escape it. I was surprised to know just how much better organic sugar for you, even if that does sounds like an oxymoron. Did you know Paraquat is a legal, albeit restricted used herbicide on sugarcane crops here in the US but has been banned in the EU since 2007? I was even more surprised to understand the intense and long processing required to produce refined white sugar – sulphur dioxide, formic acid, phosphoric acid and calcium hydroxide, etc., Organic and Raw sugars means less energy used, less waste products and fewer chemicals (like aspartame and sucralose which is made with chlorine) which we can all say AMEN to.
Let me make a clarification, brown sugar is NOT raw sugar. It is a a further processed white refined sugar with molasses syrup and then dried again. Another plus is that raw sugar contains trace minerals and nutrients… the white is devoid of any. It also cooks and bakes just the same way as refined sugar. So next time be a little fancy and use the Sugar in the Raw packets… your body thanks you!

Fab Food Finds…

I am a junk food addict… and fear my child will probably be as well. Like Mother, like Daughter they always say… If you came to our home a few years ago you would be guaranteed your selection of carbonated beverages and chips. In an effort to be healthier for our daughter we’ve discovered some snacks that are cleverly disguised as our old cupboard favorites.

I don’t know about you, but I started to find the Pepperidge Farm Goldfish a little salty. We love Annie’s Homegrown Organic Cheddar Bunnies. Another thing we love, they come in family size boxes as well as individual snack packages perfect for Halloween distribution anyone?

Who loves Cheese Puffs? The Cheetos Killer… Snikiddy’s Grilled Cheese Puffs… one word… YUM! They can be found at Whole Foods and yes… Target! The have lots of other delicious organic options like their Chocolate Chippers and Cherry Oaties Cookies as well as Pizza Pie and Rockin Ranch Puffs…

While roaming the aisles of Target… yes roaming… we LOVE to roam Target… lo and behold in the frozen food aisle – what did I spy? Could it be? Frozen Fillets of Wild Caught Salmon and Flounder? 6 individually sealed portions for $7.50! These were perfect for my early solid feeding baby mixed with some rice porridge, adding just a little flavoring with organic chicken broth. Just another reason why we love Target!
