Simple Teachings about Simple Giving #SIMPLEGiving

© SUZANNE M. CHAN 2013I’ve been having an ongoing lesson with my children on being charitable.  If there is anything that I want my children to learn, it’s to be charitable.  In recent years I’ve learned that being charitable reaps multitudes of rewards.  I am a strong believer in karma and what you put out is what you get in return.  Whenever I get the chance to impart the wisdom of charity in its many forms, I accept it.

It’s so simple to be charitable and Champions for Kids has partnered up with Dole to encourage community projects across the country benefiting children in need, called Simple Service Projects.  They outlined 4 easy steps to create your own Simple Service Project.

  1. GATHER your friends, family, and co-workers.
  2. LEARN about the needs of children in your community.
  3. GIVE items to help kids enjoy happier & healthier lives.
  4. SHARE your story with us to inspire others.

I went through the Simple Service Project steps with my children and we decided on a Pool Party so we could include many kids of different ages and also carry on the collection for longer than 1 time slot.  The kids and I spent a lot of time thinking about who we wanted to help.  My daughter, my biggest champion, wanted to do something at the hospital I work at but it wasn’t quite the right fit.  I redirected them to think about a recent child in need and we thought of our friend Kinsey who had a rare life threatening disease in the hospital and how she couldn’t eat sometimes or eat certain foods.  We thought about all the other children in long term rehabilitation facilities who have no family.  We talked about what some of their favorite snacks were and what it felt like when they got their very favorite snack to eat.  We decided to start a snack drive for the children at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children not too far from our home. My daughter was super excited to be bringing some little kids healthy and yummy snacks, something other than hospital food, to help them get better sooner.

20140828_153443Over the last few weeks we hosted several mini pool party/play dates and collected a box of delicious snacks to be donated to St. Mary’s Hospital for Children.  Adding to our collection of snacks, the kids and I made a Walmart run and picked up some of our favorite Dole Fruit cups and even got to try their new Fruit Crisp, now our favorite new snack. We even found a box of miscellaneous extra party favors to include with the snacks making it a nice little package.  The kids thought it was super simple, doing what they love to do – swim, and collect for a great cause!  We’ve got one more pool party tomorrow to close out the summer and close our donation!
