Mark your Calendar: DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day – April 26th!

Spring is here! Finally! I’m sure you’re just as excited as me. I’ve been getting some spring cleaning done here and there, from cleaning out the closet to a complete sweep of the house. This year we are adding cleaning out the medicine cabinet and I am encouraging that you do the same! April 26 is the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day. My local hospital is accepting donations of expired and unwanted medications all day long. If you’re busy on the 26th, the FDA has a great list of tips for safely disposing your medication.  You don’t want them leaking into your local water supply!  Visit: http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm101653.htm

Here are TWO important tips:

1. Mix OTC meds with other substances like coffee grinds
2. Place them in a sealable bag or empty can before disposing of them.
Now’s a great time, while you’re sorting out the expired and unwanted medications to read your labels.  I like to re-familiarize myself with the active ingredients as well as check the dosing.  Now that I have been an OTC Safety Ambassador for almost a year now, I feel wiser and more knowledgeable about the dangers of misusing medication.  I urge you to share this message with your family and friends.  You don’t want an adverse event to happen before you and your family learn.  My husband was a prime offender and now he knows better.
