The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Road to a Cure
July 12th, 2013
This cause is very personal to me. A few years ago, my good friend’s daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia. I watched as she and her family struggle and suffer through this diagnosis. I watched a little girl go through countless medical treatments, suffer set back after set back. I watched her mother anguish over the pain her daughter was enduring both physically and emotionally. I watched her son struggle to deal with his sister’s condition and how it impacted his daily life as well. Through all this, I watched the amazing resilience and persistence this family had, to move forward, to advocate for their family and others. I rejoiced with this family when they were finally in remission and rejoice with them again at each milestone. That is why I am thrilled to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission and efforts to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. As the leading global non-profit organization dedicated to curing blood cancers, the Leu
kemia & Lymphoma Society has invested nearly one billion dollars since 1954, bringing us closer than ever to realizing the possibility of a world without blood cancers. During this time the survival rate for many blood cancer patients in North America has doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. In 1964, a child’s chance of surviving acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood leukemia, was 3%. Today, about 90% of children survive, like my friend’s daughter.
Through programs like their Team in Training program, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is supporting more than 300 research projects with one goal in mind: discovering lifesaving therapies for blood cancer patients. Team In Training is the flagship fundraising campaign of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the world’s largest and most successful charity sports endurance training program. At its 25th Anniversary milestone this year, Team In Training has trained more than 570,000 people and helped the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society invest more than $875 million in research to discover and deliver breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today. Team In Training harnesses the power of physical activity to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients, and make a positive impact on the quality of life for patients with blood cancer and their families. In exchange for training and support, you help raise money towards cures for blood cancers like leukemia — the No. 1 disease killer of children — lymphoma and myeloma.
