Earlier this week I had the chance to celebrate with the amazing Maggie Gyllenhaal, the 125th anniversary of the First Aid Kit. The First Aid Kit is my version of the “best invention since sliced bread.” To commemorate this milestone, Johnson & Johnson has launched a new campaign focused on everyday care that provides funding and resources to help educate consumers about the importance of first aid preparedness. The Everyday Care campaign kicks off with a partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide that leverages the support of Maggie Gyllenhaal on an initiative to prevent childhood injuries by helping educate children and their caretakers about sports safety.
Johnson & Johnson founder Robert Wood Johnson got the idea for making the first commercial First Aid Kits due to a conversation he had with a railway surgeon on a Denver & Rio Grande Railway train in the late 1880s. The surgeon told Johnson that railroad workers were frequently injured, but were too far away from any medical help, and Johnson had the idea to pack his company’s sterile dressings and other products in boxes that could be kept near the workers to treat them in case of injury. In creating the first commercial First Aid Kits, Johnson & Johnson collaborated with railway surgeons in 1888 to get their recommendations and suggestions on the contents that would be most needed in the kits to help the injured. Just like back then, First Aid Kits aren’t one size fits all and first aid kits have come a LONG way since then. With all the options out there, you can customize a First Aid Kit that fits your family. You can also have several First Aid Kits that work for lifestyle.
My own family has 3 separate first aid kits. The first one being our Boo Boo Box. This is my kids favorite box. They love their band-aids, and as any parents can attest to, they can heal anything. For my son, he carries everywhere with his RED medical kit. It carries his essentials including 2 epipens, benadryl, prednisone and his own little band-aid package for boo boos.
