REVIEW: Shari’s Berries is Berry Berry Good!

Whether its bringing a little something for Easter Sunday or a gift for Mother’s Day or any gathering for that matter, I am always a fan of edible gifts especially of the chocolate kind.  Who doesn’t love chocolate covered strawberries?  Edible gifts are a gift that satisfies everyone.

shariI recently discovered Shari’s Berries and they are simply divine!  I was definitely a bit skeptical about this review, ordering fruit, albeit chocolate covered fruit, through the mail?  I wondered how they were going to keep a delicate fruit like strawberries from spoiling enroute to my home.  Before I could even concern myself with those details, I had to choose from the amazing selection of gifts available on the Shari’s Berries site.  In addition to the traditional chocolate covered strawberries, although I hesitate to call them tradition when they are drizzled in confections like white chocolate, sprinkles, nuts or crunch, they offer choices for every palate.  Maybe chocolate covered strawberries aren’t your thing (seriously though?!), and perhaps you like the sweet and salty combo of chocolate covered pretzels or even cheesecake bites to rich chocolate mousse cake or yummy cupcake samplers.  They’ve even got a floral chocolate combination if you’re a bit of a traditionalist.

Back to the skepticism over delivery of such delicate treats.  I was amazed to learn Shari’s Berries has delivered over 35 million berries.  So I finally decided on the Cheesecake Trio & Full Half Dozen Spring Strawberries, satisfying this preggers cravings and waited for my delivery.  I loved that I got notification at every step of its transit.  I knew when it was packed, in transit and the approximate delivery window.  When it arrived, it was clear that a lot of care went into the packaging.  My gift was enveloped in both ice and protective cushioning all around.  I immediately opened the chocolate covered strawberries for a taste and while it wasn’t ice cold and firm, it wasn’t gushy and gross either.  It was perfect for eating right away for most, although I like mine a little more firm.  It wasn’t anything that 15 minutes in the fridge couldn’t fix.  The cheesecake required a little thaw and that’s totally okay by me.  I’m happy to know my creamy delight wasn’t spoiling in transit.  So put any of those skeptic thoughts aside and next time you want to send flowers or a little something, consider Shari’s Berries.  It’s a treat that won’t disappoint.

{ disclosure : I received no compensation for this post, but got a gift card I could use towards a purchase.  I paid the difference, shipping and tax myself, using of course my combination of discount codes and Ebates.com for a delicious treat just for me (and baby #3). }

    These berries come from the farm in crates, with dirt and anything else that may have contaminated them (animal fecal matter, pesticides, etc…) and are dipped in chocolate without washing them.

    Despite worries from the company for years about the negative health effects and consumer sentiment around not washing our strawberries before dipping them in chocolate, nothing has been done to resolve this issue.

    The company ships millions of these strawberries per year, especially now during the upcoming Christmas holiday, Valentines Day holiday and Mother’s Day holiday. The berries arrive directly from the farm, are sorted for size in machinery and directly sent to be dipped in chocolate (actually it’s not even real chocolate, but a chocolate like substance). There is actual dirty and grime accumulation all over the berry sorting equipment because of how dirty the berries are.

    The executives at the company recognized this as a potential issue and year after year give it lip service. However, putting in a real system to properly clean the berries or somehow track shipments to a certain lot of berries from a farm would cost money. Currently if a group of customers across the country contracted a food bourne infection from the berries, the company would have no way to resolve the issue or track where the berries originated from.

    Don’t send your loved ones these berries for the sake of health.
