Last week the Global Mom Relay officially kicked off on Friday, March 8, International Women’s Day! I slacked a bit on the posting, sorry had a little preterm labor issue going on there but this was way too important to just let slip by. As you know I have been a strong supporter and advocate for many of the amazing things the UN Foundation is doing and this is nothing less than amazing.
The Global Mom Relay will take place over 60+ days, from March 8th to May 8th, in honor of Mother’s Day. Sponsored by the UN Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, The Huffington Post, BabyCenter and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Global Mom Relay has moms and their friends from around the world sharing stories of motherhood in order to inspire action that will help improve the lives of mothers and children everywhere. The relay is in support of Every Woman Every Child, a movement launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to save the lives of 16 million women and children by 2015. Co-chairs Arianna Huffington, Jennifer and Lynda Lopez and Elizabeth Gore are leading the relay and proceeds raised will go to one of four initiatives that are helping women and children lead healthy and happy lives – Girl Up, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA), and the Shot@Life campaign.. The Global Mom Relay concept builds on the huge success of the Blogust relay (thanks to every one of you who commented on my post!). Participants in the Global Mom Relay will range from international development/medical experts, to political leaders, to celebrities and to mothers from Cambodia, Kenya, Taiwan and New Zealand, to name a few. You’ll recognize Melinda Gates, Bobbie Thomas, Paula and Jamie Deen who use all the social media tools at hand from interviews to blog posts to photos and videos to highlight the power of motherhood, to share an issue and cause they are committed to, or to talk about the mom who inspires them. They will then “pass the baton” to the next relay participant.
What I love most is that even someone like me, sitting in bed on bed rest — who would love to be on the ground making things happen, but can’t — can do something to help and so can you. Many people have the debate about being actively engaged and passively engaged — but I don’t care as long as you ARE engaged. For some people, like me on bed rest, all I can do is share and click and that’s okay. Know that just by sharing a Relay post on Twitter, Facebook or Email, or donating $5 or more as part of the relay, a $5 donation will be donated by Johnson & Johnson and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to one of four initiatives that are helping women and children lead healthy and happy lives (love that!). The Global Mom Relay can raise up to $8,000 per day for 60 days for a possible total of $500,000. There will be 60 days of sharing opportunity, so any time that works for you to dive in and share a relay post you will have an impact.
