REVIEW: Walgreen’s FlatOut Delicious! #FlatOutHot

Sandwiches of all types are all the rave these days. My latest obsession of late are Paninis. The plethora of options from simple fresh mozzarella and tomato melts to more exotic tastes is limitless. There is something about that crunchy grill mark that makes it just taste infinitely better!

Flatout has recently partnered with Hungry Girl to launch their new Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbread available exclusively at Walgreens. Hungry Girl is not a nutritionist, rather a “foodologist” who shares her love of food with guilt-free delicious recipes! You can find her delicious FlatOut Foldit Flatbread in Walgreens bread aisle with delicious 100 calorie flavors like Rosemary & Olive Oil and 100% Whole Wheat with Flax.

I’m excited to share with you two of my favorite Panini Press snacks.

photo+1(2).JPGOne of my favorite indulgences is Peking Duck. I will NEVER turn it down. While it is a rich fatty delicacy meant for special occasions, every once in a while I make my own faux version. In any Chinese household, kind of like the American version of deli meats, you can often find soy sauce chicken, roast pork and roast duck in the fridge. Armed with my favorite tool in the kitchen, my Panini Press, I can throw together a Roasted Duck Flat in two shakes of a second.

  • Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbread in Traditional White
  • Roasted Duck Shredded (can be purchased at most Chinese Takeout Restaurants and Markets) Dark meat preferable
  • Hoisin Sauce
  • Sliced Green Onions

Simply pile on the shredded roasted duck on half of the Flatout. Sprinkle shredded chives, drizzle hoisin sauce and Foldit! Enjoy it as a more traditional take on Peking Duck or you can add a little crunch by pressing it for 2 minutes in the Panini Press.

*TIP: If you’re calorie counting you can take the fatty skin off the duck and still have an ever flavorful snack.

Another favorite dish of mine is Japanese Miso Glazed Eggplant. It’s a simple dish that packs a lot of flavor.  It’s an incredibly healthy vegetable and so much easier to make than I thought.

20130201-125120.jpg Miso Glazed Eggplant

  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 tablespoon sake
  • 2 tablespoon shiro miso paste
  • 3 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 Japanese eggplants, cut into slices or chunks
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • toasted sesame seeds, for garnish

20130201-125129.jpgPlace the mirin and sake in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for about 2 minutes and add the miso.  Stir in the sugar, reduce the heat to very low, and continue to cook, stir the mixture until smooth.

Cut up the eggplant in slices.  Brush the eggplants with sesame oil. Put the eggplants on a baking sheet and place in the broiler for 3 minutes.  Do not leave them unattended.  They cook fast, check to make sure that they do not burn. Turn and cook for another 3 minutes or until the tops are a light to medium brown crispy.

20130201-125139.jpgToss the crisp eggplants in the miso sauce mixture and put in the broiler until the sauce bubbles up, about a minute. Add to FoldIt Flatbread and consume right away for a delicious crispy treat.

I hope you’ll enjoy these #FlatOutHot Asian Twists!

{ disclosure: This post is part of a campaign sponsored by Walgreens and The Motherhood.  I received a Panini Press and a gift card to sample the all new Flatout Hungry Girl Foldit Flatbread.  As always all opinions expressed here are my very own. }
