Who doesn’t get a little nostalgic when you hear the name Annie, a story set in 1933 about an eleven-year-old orphan named Annie. The minute I saw the first advertisement for Annie, I was humming, “Hard Knock Life”. Even if you’re not familiar with the story line, you know many of the tunes made famous by Annie like “Tomorrow” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You” I was so excited to see the revival of Annie, sharing this heartfelt, lovable story with a new generation.
This was my daughter’s first introduction to a Broadway production and it was the most memorable experience for us as Mother/Daughter. We made it a Girl’s Night Out with one of her best friends and her mom. It was all she could talk about for weeks, so much so their teacher had to email us to check that our pick-up plans that day hadn’t changed. The girls were completely giddy about their trip into the city. Making it extra special, we started the night out, at Becco, in true dinner and a show fashion. With tummies filled with delicious fresh & homemade pasta, we were off to see Annie!
While I was so completely taken with the professionalism and amazing voices of the many children cast in this show, and of course the amazing Katie Finneran, my darling girl was mesmerized by all the singing, dancing and gorgeous sets. The story follows Annie in her quest to find her parents who left her behind. While her biological parents were never to be found again, she found a kindred spirit in wealthy benefactor, Oliver Warbucks and found herself a new family. There were smiles all around!
Having only watched the movie as a child, all the historical adult undertones were lost on me then, but poignant to see as an adult, and in between singing the familiar tunes, it gave me a new perspective on the story as a whole. It made for a storyline that fit cross generational. Annie is a real family treat now playing at the famed and prestigious Palace Theater. Tickets are now on-sale thru TicketMaster. Get them fast, this is one show you don’t want to miss!
