Angelina Ballerina: The Musical

There’s nothing I love more than toddler and me time and when we were invited to see Angelina Ballerina: The Musical I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to spend some q-time with her.  She had just begun dance lessons and was enthralled with all things dance.  She could be found often just twirling around the house and demonstrating all her moves whenever she could grab our attention.  For some reason I couldn’t figure out why I hadn’t added Angelina Ballerina to her TV line up — the toddler is our very own Angelina Ballerina!

Being that this was her first exposure to the theatre, I was very nervous.  Having heard stories about toddlers and their limited attention span at movies and shows, I was wasn’t sure what I was signing us up for.  But the toddler never ceases to amaze me.  From start to finish she was captivated!  Aside from having to hold her back — she wanted to run onto the stage and dance with Angelina — she was the perfect theatre attendee!  I admit to nervously glancing from my watch to my toddler wondering just how long she would last.  At the 1pm showtime, it was normally her naptime but I thought the length of the show, just a little over an hour, was just right for her age group.  Following the show, we got to get “autographs” from the cast and were treated to a dance workshop with Angelina and friends as well as a very special story time with author Katharine Holabird.  The toddler thought it was “the best day ever!” and that’s really music to my ears.

Vital Theatre Company & HIT Entertainment present “ANGELINA BALLERINA, THE MUSICAL,” with book and lyrics by SUSAN DiLALLO and music by BEN MORSS.  Angelina and her friends, Alice, Gracie, AZ, Viki, and even their teacher, Ms. Mimi, are all aflutter because a special guest is coming to visit Camembert Academy! Angelina and her friends will perform all types of dance, including hip-hop, modern dance, the Irish jig and of course, ballet, and they are excited to show off their skills to their famous visitor. Angelina is the most excited of all, but will she get the starring moment she hopes for? Based on the CG-animated series, Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps on PBS KIDS®, ANGELINA BALLERINA THE MUSICAL is a family-friendly show that will have the entire audience dancing in the aisles. Performances run Saturdays and Sundays at 11am and 1pm, October 2nd through November 21st. Tickets are $29.50, and $49.50 for premium seats(first 3 rows) but every seat in the house has perfect vantage. The show is appropriate for ages 3-12. For reservations, please click here or call (212) 579-0528. VITAL THEATRE COMPANY is located at 2162 Broadway, 4th Floor, at 76th Street, on the Upper West Side.  Grab your tickets now!

REVIEW: Sesame Street Story Visit

We recently discovered Sesame Street’s Story Visit.  It was the perfect way for the toddler to engage with her aunt who is studying abroad for the next few years.  At the tender age of 3, the toddler who has known my sister her entire life, affectionately considers her the alternative version of me was devastated.

When my sister decided to move half way around the globe a few months ago, it was difficult explaining to a 3 year old why she’d no longer get to see her favorite aunt.  The first few weeks were the roughest as my sister, who then lived far away in New Jersey, had often spent the weekend sleeping over to spend time with her niece and nephew.  There would be no more sleep overs and the concept of far away no longer made sense to her as her aunt lived far away in New Jersey and came every weekend, so why couldn’t she come now.  How far was this far away? When her aunt left, there was many promises of skyping and phone calls and while we had those moments, it simply wasn’t the same.

The toddler wanted her Aunt to come over and play with her.  She wanted her Aunt to read her a book.  She wanted her Aunt to tuck her into bed.  She wanted to show her Aunt her new toys.  She didn’t understand why her Aunt just couldn’t come over.  While the phone calls were okay, she didn’t understand why she couldn’t just call her Aunt anytime she wanted.  When her Aunt was stateside, the toddler would hand me my cellphone and tell me to dial her Aunt and we’d call her anytime the toddler wanted.  She was very confused by this move around the globe and trying to explain time zones to a 3 year old just wasn’t going to happen.  Believe me, I tried.

“Your Aunt is sleeping.”  ”Why?”  ”It’s nighttime there.”  ”No it’s not.”  ”Yes it is, over there.”  ”Far away?”  ”Yes, far away”  ”No, it’s not.  Call Auntie!”    ”Fine, we can leave a voice message.”  –skype vm —  ”Hi Auntie!  It’s Ava.  Can you read me a story?  I love you!  Bye-bye!”  – hang up, hands me my cell phone — “Text Auntie Mommy!  Tell her to call Ava” — and we’d go on and on until she got tired…

When I discovered Story Visit designed by the people at Nokia Research Center, I thought the idea was brilliant!  They initially pitched it to me for grandparents living across the country to converse with their grandkids but all I could think about was how close this was to having Auntie reading the toddler a story.  It was part video conferencing and part connected story reading.

Navigating the site is rather intuitive.  It involves initial account and camera set up for both sides but after that it’s easy as pie.  The library currently has 7 books for you to read with your favorite little one (Ages 2 – 5).  It’s a very interactive reading approach.  Both parties can control the environment with both sides seeing exactly what the other is seeing on the same page.  If the child clicks on a balloon in the story, the adult on the other screen will see a click on the balloon if on the same page.  There were a few glitches, mostly due to my sister’s poor internet connection.  There sometimes was a voice relay delay, othertime it would time out, but when it went smoothly, it was loads of fun for both the toddler and her Aunt.

Story Visit is available for a limited time during their research period for a free 4 week trial, but I hope they continue this offering as this is such a wonderful way for the toddler to connect in play with her Aunt around the globe.

REVIEW: Juno Baby has a new sibling – Juno Jr!

Oh you couldn’t even imagine the excitement in the house when Juno Jr arrived!  It had to be the most highly anticipated event for the toddler.  Sadly we missed the VIP Celebrity Launch at FAO due to an iPhone malfunction — I thought it was at 11am, instead it was at 1pm.  The toddler handled the whole thing with such grace despite her momma’s unfulfilled promise of a Juno sighting.  My heart broke as she told her father that she didn’t get to see Juno because Juno was “busy” and Mommy missed Daddy (sorta) so we had to go home.  Gotta love that kid!

The toddler loves Juno Baby even though she’s not a baby.  That’s the beauty of Juno Baby, the music can be appreciated by audiences of all ages.  Because of that reason I was curious to see how Juno Jr would be different.  Just like Juno Baby, you’ll find original, orchestral music along with all your favorite Juno characters but this time Juno engages her audience.  The toddler was chiming in as if on cue… fast music!  slow music!  And if we (the parents) had to admit it, so were we… Perfect for your growing Juno Baby fan we highly recommend Juno Jr!

Two new DVDs are now available — “The Day the Music Stopped” and “One Bunny Band”. The new CD line, “Welcome to Harmonia Springs,” features all the songs from these two DVDs as well as the upcoming DVD, “Friends Make a Symphony.”

REVIEW: High Plains Bison, the alternative red meat

Meat loving connoisseurs should definitely check out High Plains Bison!  Their grass-fed bison has significantly less fat per gram than other animal proteins and contains more healthy omega-3 fatty acids, iron, protein, and minerals than  beef.  They are all natural – no hormones, fillers, antibiotics or artificial ingredients. While it has a slightly more gamey taste according to some, bison’s grass diet makes their meat milder and richer. All of their meat is 100% USDA certified and many of their cuts can even go so far as to claim to be American Heart Association certified.

We had a chance to try High Plains Bison‘s Sampler and despite my husband’s initial skeptics, the rib-eye was incredibly juicy and tender.  Since I don’t claim to be a meat connoisseur I couldn’t tell the difference.  It does cook differently than beef, a lot faster and the redness of the meat can be deceiving to the eye as far as readiness.  The toddler wanted in on the Hot Dogs and obviously since she consumed 2 in one sitting, didn’t notice the difference!  I’m not sure that’s necessarily the point, but as a healthier and more eco-friendly alternative to beef, I think bison is a great choice.

The actual highlight of the sampler was their amazing Italian Sausages. So incredibly juicy and flavorful I couldn’t get enough of it. You can purchase each item separately but I think the combos from High Plains Bison are a great deal and make great gifts.  Those who are concerned about mailing meats — High Plains Bison ships their products in a recyclable (love!) custom insulated cooler with plenty of dry ice to ensure that your product will arrive frozen and in perfect condition.

High Plains Bison is offering Mom Confessional readers a generous 20% discount off all food items with code EATGOOD22 at checkout. Please note that when you use this code the discount will not show up until the billing page.

REVIEW: Safety First with Safety 1st Pros and Munchkin!

{ disclosure: Protect by Munchkin Deco Safety Gate was provided to facilitate this review, the opinions expressed here are always my own. }

When our daughter was born we nonchalantly child-proofed our home with the attitude that a good parent watches their kids like a hawk.  So as long as we watched her, nothing would happen.  Ava was such a good child, defying all the usual child-like curiosities, she never gave us pause or worry.  We made minor safety adjustments here and there as necessary, like locks on our cabinets when she figured out that her snacks were inside, she had her very own draw full of kitchen tools and bowls to ward off any need to bang on pots and we put up one single gate at the top of the stairs so she wouldn’t tumble down.  Aside from that, we pretty much flew by the seat of our pants.

With the birth of our son, we realized we couldn’t be so nonchalant anymore.  Keeping an eye on one child was one thing, but keeping your eyes on TWO?!  He recently started crawling and with this new skill under his belt, like a typical boy, he’s a CURIOUS one!   This little one is drawn to outlets, loves chewing on wires, loves the remote, pressing buttons, banging on my computer.  He’s into everything!  Yesterday we discovered he could open and close draws and all I could think about was the million places he could clip his fingers!  He is the polar opposite of our daughter.

Thank G-d for the Safety 1st Pros!  Last month we were fortunate to have Philip Olivieri from Safety 1st Pros over to educate us on how to childproof our home.  Let’s face it, the average home isn’t constructed or furnished with child safety in mind.  The Safety 1st Pros provide a complimentary child safety consultation.  An average appointment lasts just around an hour, as they walk with you from room-to-room, pointing out the obvious and the hidden hazards, recommending high-quality childproofing products specific to your home.   They’ve got solutions for even the more unique home designs including my split level house which doesn’t accommodate the standard safety gates.  No challenge is too big or small.  When they’re all done with their assessment, they provide you with a handy itemized list of recommended products, as well as installation fees.  You can choose to purchase the products suggested  and install them yourself or best of all, the Safety 1st Pros offers installation that very same day!

Philip was amazing and thorough.  He let us know that our pull cord blinds were part of a voluntary recall and were not safe in homes with young children.  He pointed out hidden dangers like windows without bars and cords we have seen so often we’ve dismissed.  He gave us solutions for keeping bathroom doors closed with handy flip locks at the top.  He gave us invaluable advice on which safety products works and which don’t — you know, the ones kids figure out in a minute.

We received the Protect by Munchkin Deco Safety Gate which blends the natural look of wood with the security of a steel powerframe and fit the decor of our home perfectly but couldn’t figure out how to install it in our uniquely designed staircase.  It was no problem for the Safety 1st Pros, the installation of the gate was solved with ease.  Perfect

timing too since the infant now is mobile.  With a double locking mechanism on handle its easy for adults to use, but difficult for toddlers and young children — yay!  U-shaped steel powerframe keeps gate securely in place while an extra wide walkthrough allows for easy in and out access. The gate is approved for use at top of the stairs (which is where we installed it), bottom of stairs, and between rooms for maximum versatility. This pressure fit gate also includes hardware for extra safety as well as an adjustable latch on the bottom to limit its opening to one direction or another. Gate is 29.5″ tall and fits openings up to 40.5″ wide (includes 3 extensions). Gate is capable of expanding to 54″ with additional extensions. Suitable for use with children from 6 months up to 24 months of age.

To schedule your childproofing consultation, please visit Safety 1st Pros or call 877-717-7823. Please visit the Munchkin website for more information on the Protect by Munchkin Deco Safety Gate and their entire line of designer gates.

GIVEAWAY: Walgreen’s Random Acts of Wellness

{ disclosure: This is part of a compensated campaign with Walgreens and The Motherhood.  Gift cards for giveaway were supplied by Walgreens. }

{ comments are closed for this post.  please see below for information on how to enter giveaway }

When I was asked to participate in Walgreen’s Random Acts of Wellness Campaign I gave them an emphatic yes.  Being a nursing student has taught me so much about the importance of proper healthcare and Walgreen’s Random Acts of Wellness Campaign was something I could definitely stand behind.  Just like the way this blog evolved in my need to share everything I was learning as a parent, I wanted to scream (share) everything I was learning in school.  With every passing day I’m looking for more ways to share and give back to the community and it makes me so happy that I’ve chosen this profession where I can do just that.

I had signed up earlier to volunteer and give free blood pressure readings at the 5th Annual Harlem Health Revival and thought it was the PERFECT place to share my Random Acts of Wellness.  You see, for many residents of Harlem, these health fairs are their only source of health care for the entire year whether it be because of financial circumstances, lack of insurance or lack of available education.   This years Harlem Health Revival brought, at last count, over 750 people, to Jackie Robinson Park in the heart of Harlem.   The purpose of the Health Fair is to motivate residents to adopt healthier lifestyles and provide the tools and information to advocate for themselves as patients.  Each registered participant received a Health Passport which they took station to station for a mini-physical and be educated on health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cardiac health, etc.,  At the end of their tour they could opt to hand-in their results so we could follow up with them over the course of the next year.  I thought that was truly an amazing gift to the community with an amazing high-risk population of people who had such sweet stories to tell.

During the Harlem Health Revival, I recruited 5 of my amazing classmates who were in the trenches giving blood pressure readings, talking and laughing with our patients, to give one giftcard for a free flu shot to one lucky patient while I stood back, watched and listened.  I was so proud of my classmates sharing about the important of controlling high blood pressure in the community where it is so prevalent  as well as educating them on the importance of getting their flu shot.  I wasn’t too surprised to hear that many of them don’t get the flu shot.  Some of the reasons that were mentioned included:

  • Just another expense I don’t need to undertake.
  • They don’t have enough for everyone.
  • If I drink lots of orange juice I’ll be okay.
  • I don’t like shots and you have to get two.
  • I heard you can get the flu if you get the shot and I can’t afford to be sick.
  • If I don’t bring it home to the kids then they won’t get it.
  • If my kids get the shot then we’re okay.

The misconceptions about getting the flu shot were prevalent!  Last year there definitely wasn’t enough available.  I struggled to get mine despite being in the high risk and priority category of being pregnant.  Both my doctor and my ob/gyn had run out.  Even our pediatrician who would gladly give me one ran out.  I went to two flu clinics at my neighborhood drug store before I was able to get one.  It was a feat unto itself.

I was thrilled to let them know that this year’s shot protects them both against the H1N1 (swine) virus and two other influenza viruses, combined in one. So you don’t have to get TWO shots.  You cannot get the flu from the shot, its an inactivated form of the virus.  Herd mentality does work, but in mass quantities, not in a small family. The CDC recommends everyone over the age of 6 months get the flu shot.  For children, if it’s your first time getting a flu shot, you will have to get two, but every year following it’s just ONE shot.

The Health Revival was an amazing experience and I want to thank Walgreen’s for allowing me to share the gift of flu shots in my Random Acts of Wellness.  At the end of the day I was only saddened that I couldn’t give one to everyone.

If a tree falls in a forest, but no one hears it…

did it really fall?  That was the feeling I had after the storm last week.  For my Wordless Wednesday post I thought the photos should stand on their own while I gathered my thoughts.

The storm itself was rather anti-climactic for me in that I was on campus studying alone in the lounge.  Having always been afraid of lightening and thunderstorms,  I tried my best to coax myself through it and soon enough it was over.  After waiting an additional half hour afterwards to make sure it was really over, and anticipating any traffic mess that might have ensued might be cleared up by then, I headed home.

Almost immediately I hit traffic leaving Washington Heights towards Queens, and my only thoughts were that once again the rain had brought out the idiot in every driver.  As congestion eased up in certain areas and the reasons unknown, my exasperation increased because my normally 20 minute commute was doubling, tripling and then some.  As if walking into an alternate dimension, it took me almost 25 minutes to get off my exit and I was not prepared for what appeared before me.

I was greeted by traffic chaos created by non-working street lights and cars just going at will in every direction.  Cautiously navigating the few block drive to my house, my jaw felt permanently dropped.  I saw trees on top of houses, roofs ripped off, branches everywhere, cars smashed in half by fallen trees and fall power lines giving sparks off.  As I drove through the neighborhood I couldn’t help the eery feeling creeping over me.  As I drove into my driveway, a sigh of relief washed over me to see that our home was untouched and we still had power for the time being.  I ran into the house giving my kids the biggest hug I could muster, weary from the long drive.  My in-laws made light conversation about the storm and the neighborhood while I thanked G-d for sparing us.  When the husband got home, we proceeded as if the storm was a mere blip in our past, dinner eaten and kids readying for bed.  The husband’s craving for Hooter’s wings demanded he get home and off he went into the chaos… and then it all went dark.

Already nightfall, it was pitch black and the infant was on the floor in the playroom, the toddler in the living room playing by herself while Grandma was cleaning in the kitchen.  I was working on the computer and when the lights went out, I dropped to the floor crawling around trying to remember where the infant was last.  He was just sitting quietly frozen in the same place I last saw him trembling.  I quickly scooped him up into my arms and called for the toddler.  She came running and before I could protest, she easily navigated the stairs down to the playroom and right into my arms in the dark.  With my children in both arms, I located my mother in law and handed her both kids, moving them to the living room and telling them NOT to move.  Meanwhile my mind was racing.  Where are the flashlights?  Where is my phone?  How do I secure the family?  Do we have candles?  Where is the husband?

I had no idea where the flashlights were but remembered that just a few weeks ago I had finally made an investment in something I thought we and any family should always have, an Etón FR600 Solarlink.  I recalled placing it in the basement for an emergency and now know that’s probably not the best place for emergency equipment to be when an emergency occurs.  Lesson learned.  I felt my way down to the basement and used the limited light my cellphone provided to locate the brand spanking new unopened Etón FR600.  I chided myself for not opening it sooner and familiarizing myself with its operation as I attempted to do so to the light from my phone.  Luckily it was mostly intuitive and a few cranks later the light was activated and the radio was set to 1010WINS.

Gathering myself, I finally placed a call to the husband and like someone who hadn’t fully comprehended the situation only said to me, “Oh well, what can I do about it.  I might as well get my wings.” !*$%&*@!?   I hung up the phone feeling frustrated and that eery feeling was creeping up on me again.  Making my way back towards the kids, I sat with them in the middle of the living room hugging them and memories of 9-11 came flooding back.  I felt all alone and the chaos and destruction outside of my home seemed unreal, almost like a scene from a movie or dream.  You’d think I’d learned some valuable lessons from having survived such a tragedy to be more prepared.  It was a huge shock to realize how dependent we are on power.  Without it, we truly felt POWERLESS.

All the things I would do in crisis or panic mode required electricity I realized.  Without power I had all this free time on my hand that I would normally kill for, but ironically I needed power to enjoy.  I wanted to study, but needed light to read.  I wanted to bake, but that required light, power and then some. I wanted to surf the internet without having to do work or study… but that also required electricity.  This was an awful feeling.  On the upside, it was already late at night and the children were sleepy and power mostly wouldn’t be missed if we were sleeping.  Tomorrow morning would bring sunlight.

As I laid in bed, 1010WINS still blasting their news alerts, I was suddenly struck with concern with how long this power outage would be.  There was still chaos on the transit lines.  Ours in particular was still shutdown.  I sadly didn’t feel like I had the luxury to miss school simply because of a power outage.  I feared how much of my grade would be deducted in my absence especially since the city was

untouched by the storm.  Sometime during the middle of the night, while tossing and turning I realized I had a much bigger problem to deal with.  While the adults of the household and even the toddler would be okay, the infant would not be.  Right as the power went out, I was in the middle of placing an order for baby food.  The infant was still nursing and my storage of breast milk was now lost due to my in-laws incessant need to eat to compensate for lack of power compromising the refrigerator and freezer situation.   The infant had no baby food AND no milk.  I was devastated.  Mapping it out like an equation, I placed all the factors into a bucket.  NO mass transit tomorrow, MUST go to school, NO power, NO baby food, NO storage of breast milk — and I came to the conclusion that the infant was going to college.

Despite the initial protest I got from the husband, without power at home, no baby food or milk and concerns over my grades, he finally agreed that it was best I went to school.  Despite giving myself a traffic buffer time, we still cut it pretty close getting to class on time.  There were many prayers said as the clock advanced and I was fortunate to find FREE parking just a block from my school.  As I walked into class I felt strange with a baby in tow as the city looked untouched by the storm.  Even my professor, who despite living out on the island, I couldn’t even begin to convey the depth of damage done in my neighborhood.  With only her commute effected, I could only explain my situation and hoped she would understand and she did.

It was the same feeling through out the day.  Just miles from home, everything was untouched by the storm.  When we returned home, still no power restored, I needed to make a grocery run for baby food and was greeted by a curious display of people.  The store seemed to be evenly divided by people who were either effected by the storm or not.  There were shopping carts stocked full with emergency necessities and other filled with their normal shopping.  I knew which group I belonged with and it was very surreal.  So if a tree falls in a forest, but no one hears it… did it really fall?
